I have been actively observing #WWDC since '03, as we approach the eve of #wwdc25 I am excited to see the changes especially with synchronized branding. As an end user, this might be the last one I invest any effort in watching. Its a developer conference yes, but ultimately, it starts the engine for fall. #operatingsystems in general are solved problems and the everyday things we do on them is not changed dramatically by new OS releases anymore. I'm sure Monday will be #Apples aero moment.

I just saw this one shared on the “Orange Site.” A few of them were written in Common Lisp.

I know Gwen Weinholt has built her Loko Scheme for running on bare metal, I wonder if that should be listed on this site as well?

What #unixlike operating systems do you know which are easy to port? Something like #NetBSD. I wonder if there is anything written in #commonlisp or #rust

There are some options but I'm not sure how much easy are they to port. I've heard many positive comments about bare metal development using Rust. I wonder how is common lisp in this regard.

I have extensive programming experience but not on bare metal or kernel programming.

I'm kinda missing the point of users wanting a Snow Leopard like release of #macOS. Snow Leopard needed optimizations at a time when the #Mac still used spinning disks, used an outside vendor for the brains, #operatingsystems were still installed from DVD media. Its hard to define bloat in modern macOS, its definitely feature rich and it would be an understatement to say its optimized for Apple Silicon. When #Apple does drop support for #Intel that Snow Leopard release will happen then.

Driving back from Houston yesterday I decided I should take my little strongly typed language and its compiler and runtime and make an Oberon System like thingy with some influence from Inferno and you can have a little virtual operating system with everything written in the little language and a little windowing system and maybe in twenty years when I’m retired I can port it to bare metal and some hobbyists will use it and I can die happy.

#mastodon seems like the kind of platform that #lightphone users would appreciate. Anyone on here try it out? And or interested in hearing about the user experience?

Here's something I find rather #annoying when it comes to #operatingsystems and their public image. I had to install both Windows and Linux on a machine, and I want you to determine which was #userfriendly #Windows and which is #Linux:

OS 1:
Attempt to download the ISO from the manufacturer's website
Get through all of the prompts just to be denied the download
Realize that your adblocker is causing the manufacturer's website to see you as a threat, so you turn it off
Still denied
Realize that your LAN's DNS server which also blocks ads is causing the problem too, so you turn it off
STILL DENIED
Use a completely different browser and get it downloaded
Run the installer, but it sees no disk drives in the machine
IRST must be loaded before the installer will continue
"Driver install error"
Find a 3 year old copy of an ISO because you're a pack-rat data hoarder
Finally get it installed
Spend the next 6 hours updating

OS 2:
Download from manufacturer using torrents, utilizing all of your bandwidth
Install OS
