I'm looking to buy a #PC within the next few months. I haven't had a PC in many years, I've been using MacBooks. I feel very much out of the loop and I'm no longer in touch with people who are techy and could help steer me through this…

I'm looking to choose my own build, but have it built for me. I've come across some websites that do this but I'm not confident about picking one. I'm looking for a recommendation for a place that would check obvious boxes—trustwrorthy, doesn't overcharge, good quality, full selection, customization, etc. I'm looking to build something fairly powerful.

A Game About Digging A Hole (PC/Mobile, XPd on PC) You spot an ad for a house that claims there's treasure buried in the back yard. After paying an oddly low price, it's time to get digging!

So this is a fairly short (there's even an achieve for beating it in a half hour) very simple game that's literally about digging a hole, lol. Very light sim game, you start out with a basic ass shovel and with some elbow grease and selling of ores you find, you can upgrade not only your shovel into an automatic drilling machine, but you'll also get and improve a jet pack, and a couple other things as well.

For what seems like a very basic and short time sink, I found it oddly engaging (but then I do like a good sim.) Ended up putting 6 hours into it, playing through it twice. Only achieve I don't have is the "beat it in 30mins" one I mentioned. There's more than rocks and ores to dig up in the backyard, so that certainly ups the engagement factor.

Music, ambiance and SFX are all good. There's a little jank to the hit detection between you and the environment, but it's not really anything beyond the usual spottiness of an FPS type interaction. There's also a decent amount of humor here, as one would expect.

While there's not much meat here for more than a few hours of amusement, the price of admission is also low at $5 US. I'd be hard pressed to find something else for 5 bucks that can entertain me for 6 hours, except during Steam Sales 🤪 (There does seem to be websites that are hosting this game for free? when I searched to see if the dev had made a website for it I found a lot of DL results, so.. course YMMV on the risk of trying one of those DLs)

So overall, if you like sim games or want to see if you/your friend(s) or partner(s) might like sim games, I'd suggest checking out Digging A Hole. It'll give you a idea what the genre is like without burying you under 100 systems to manage, heh. 👍 👍

The First Tree (Multi, XPd on PC)
Play as a mother fox trying to find her kits. As you explore the world, you'll also uncover the relationship of a son and his estranged father. Yep, it's a "feels" game, so be prepared.

Game is set in Alaska, and even tho the art style is quite "simplistic", it certainly conveys the feeling of remote snowy wilderness well. As you begin the journey, it becomes apparent very quickly that this game is all about the feels. Doesn't take long to figure out that the couple heard discussing current life events are talking about the death of the man's father. Be warned, this is not the only death you'll be facing in this game.

Overall it's a basic 3D "open" zone exploration game. Each level has several points of interest that vary between story exposition dialogue triggers, collectible tchotchkes, and progression triggers that open things, etc. The pacing is good, fox's "walk" and "run" speeds are fine, the overall game took me 3 hours to roll credits on and earn half the achieves.

Mostly what you're doing in this game is listening to the couple relive the man's past with his father as you explore the places mentioned, of sorts? The art IS very stylized so it's more you're exploring the "suggestions" of the places. It's an interesting juxtaposition, playing as a fox, discovering things from the human's past. As expected, the music/ambiance match this setting very well.

Technically, I had no issues running this game on my Linux (Garuda) OS. I don't recall hitting any major bugs. Not entirely surprising as it is "Playable" on the Steam Deck, so it ought to work fine with Linux, heh.

I enjoyed this experience on the whole, but I do like a good kick in the feels to remind yourself you are alive. If you're the same kinda player, I would certainly recommend checking out The First Tree. 👍 👍
