Die Hohle Gasse ist ein künstlicher Hohlweg zwischen Küssnacht und Immensee in der Schweiz. In der Hohlen Gasse soll Wilhelm #Tell 1307 den habsburgischen Landvogt Hermann Gessler erschossen haben. In Friedrich Schillers Drama Wilhelm Tell sagt Tell (IV, 3): «Durch diese hohle Gasse muss er kommen. Es führt kein andrer Weg nach Küssnacht.»

all text from Scholem: To the Jews, Germany was defined and symbolized by the names of Lessing and Schiller—especially Schiller, whose significance for the forming of Jewish attitudes toward Germany was almost incalculable, and seldom appreciated by the Germans themselves. For to generations of Jews within Germany, and almost to a greater extent to Jews outside Germany, Schiller, spokesman for pure humanity, lofty poet of the highest ideals of mankind, represented everything they thought of, or wished to think of, as being German—even when, in the Germany of the last third of the 19th century, his language had already begun to sound hollow. To Schiller, who never addressed them directly, the Jews did indeed respond, and for many Jews, their encounter with him was more real than their encounter with actual Germans. German romanticism meant something to many Jews, but Schiller meant something to all of them. He was a factor in the Jewish belief in
mankind. He provided the most visible, most impressive, and most resounding occasion for the idealistic self-deception engendered by the relations of the Jews to the Germans. For the new Jew who had lost his self-confidence, Schiller's program seemed to promise everything he so fervently sought; the Jew heard no false tones in it, for this was music which spoke to his depths. The collapse of this dialogue perhaps contains one of the secrets of the general collapse of relations between Jews and Germans. After all, Schiller, to whom their love clung so passionately, was not just anybody; he was the national poet of Germany, regarded as such by the Germans themselves from 1800 to 1900.
