"Two yards of loose earth was the sole barrier between us. I said to myself - 'I'll have her in my arms again! If she be cold, I'll think it is this north wind that chills me; and if she be motionless, it is sleep.'"
- Emily Brontë, "Wuthering Heights" Fritz Eichenberg

Suffering like a heroine
"She was all but forgotten. Now the 18th-century author's republished novels reveal why she made such an extraordinary contribution to literature." Kliuless posted about author Anne Radcliffe, credited with inventing the psychological novel of suspense (plus two more women in publishing who have virtually been written out of the popular genres they helped create).
Review: The Monstrous Kind
This is a YA gothic novel with vibes, an innocent maiden, monsters, and a conspiracy. I was completely surprised by the big reveal, and I really hope that we're going to get a sequel so I can find out what happens next.

Mistress of Dark Fantasy is a collection of Dorothy Quick's 1930s-50s stories from Weird Tales. Horror tales combined with gothic romance and a definite fairy tale vibe, with more emphasis on the romance than on the horror. Odd but interesting.

"...gothic romance. Who do you recommend?"
Don't know any modern gothic romance authors, but you can't go wrong with Phyllis A. Whitney. Her's is the type of stories I'd write. When I started writing, I wanted to be like her. It seemed like she visited and then wrote about all these exotic locations (my presumption, dunno). As a writer, I speculated, I could live in different places for 1/2 a year, write a book about that, then move on again. A writer could live anywhere, get paid by a publisher anywhere, right? Remote work before there was such a thing. Her novel, /Feather on the Moon,/ started a love affair with Victoria, and my later being able to visit Buchard Gardens and have high tea at the Empress Hotel was a culmination of that.
I ended up writing SF for reasons stated previously.

The First Muse is gothic fantasy romance at its best, with lyrical writing and heart-wrenching romance.

In my historical romance Castle of the Wolf (a surprise inheritance! a castle in the Black Forest! a grumpy hero!), the heroine receives a very special deck of playing cards when she asks her motherly friend Mrs. Chisholm for advice concerning the marriage bed...

#WritersCoffeeClub Ch 1 #18 — What genres might you try if you wrote outside your chosen genres?
Gothic Romance. Love it. Read it when I didn't have SF&F around. My mom could read a book a day, so I had plenty.
I have this idea about a gothic romance in a space ship. Such places can be dark and mysterious. Think /Aliens/ where you get an enigmatic love interest instead of dripping jaws, sexual tension instead of horror...
I'd consider writing it straight. Gay if the right characters popped into my head.

So, back to genre reading: this is a most excellent twitter thread on #GothicRomance with really amazing covers and excellent analysis. Beware: sadly, the covers have no alt-text.

No TV or laptop in the bedroom, so #books and the odd foray into #Mastodon to keep me from going stir crazy in #covid isolation. Bought #JamaicaInn by #DaphneduMaurier on holiday this year, aptly in #Cornwall. Don't know if it's because I'm ill but feel slightly let down. Loved #Rebecca.
What a treat to experience an unfamiliar vintage Gothic horror movie! Masterful Dutch trappings deftly painted in the eerie for Italy's first color horror film! It makes me happy!

A vivid gothic romance in a robust, atmospheric fantasy world. There was nothing light or breezy about this beautiful moving story. I adored these flawed characters and how Mio and Rhodry were a light in the darkness for each other, even when it seemed all hope was lost.

I just started watching The Mayfair Witches on Prime and I’m enjoying it. It takes me back to all those gothic romances I devoured as a teen, but in a modern setting. The Witching Hour was my favourite of Anne Rice’s books. I haven’t read it since it came out, so my memory is fuzzy on it. I’m just glad that every single character in the show isn’t unfeasably beautiful like all the characters are in the books. #Witches #GothicRomance #GothicHorror #AnneRice #MayfairWitches
