#WordWeavers 2504.11 — Could your SC do your job?

I'm retired. Pretty much any of them could do that. To the extent that the main series antagonist is also a secondary character, getting to be retired is the WHOLE POINT of her existence from her point of view!

@Heliograph Thanks for posting that; I feel better about some literary choices. When I wrote my Mars novel I decided to use a single universal time for the entire planet. People can't live on the surface and most development is underground for radiation reasons. No windows. Some population is on spaceships or a station. One zone gives the same diurnal schedule to everyone everywhere. When they rarely need to use the surface, they use offset and solar terms, "like local dusk is just before lunch."

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2504.10 2/2 — How comfortable are you with wordplay?

I figured a excerpt was in order. From the chapter titled Consent in Mars Need Women. May Ri is very attracted to this guy, and her friend is interested in someone named Rodriguez…

Reina cut in. "May Ri's training to become an engineer. She never gives up. She's fun, too."

Fun? May Ri thought, scoffing, looking at Reina. Then Randolf took her hand. They locked gazes again.

Reina whispered into her ear, mischievously, "I hacked the showers and Rodriguez's cabin cam. His nickname, The Rod, is well deserved. As for Randolf, he's—"

"Randy?"

Reina laughed. Randy answered, "Yes?" looking confused.

Welp, I now have an excuse to not go to work and get lots of rest. I'm testing positive, just like the formerly NoVid spouse. Oh, wait, I'm retired. Other than meds, same old same old. Requesting Paxlovid. No need for masks anymore in the house, at least. Gonna isolate; certain things you don't want to share with your friends or neighbors!

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2504.10 — How comfortable are you with wordplay?

If you've been reading my posts for a while, you might deduce that I am very comfortable with wordplay. I rarely let any opportunity for multiple congruent meanings slip by. I do go for the joke when it makes the point in the essay, or moderates the tension in a story. Because aspects of my stories are NSFW, what I write here about them needs to be taken in multiple ways. My writing is full of double entendres, irony, innuendo, and sarcasm—usually on the part of the 1st person narrator. I am no stranger to rhetoric and elocution, and when I can employ it, I do. Lastly, word choice counts, and I'll sometimes choose a Britishism or an archaic word for affect.

All this while maintaining transparency. I am keenly aware that I mustn't push the reader out of the book. Much gets culled during revision.
