Unpopular opinion: we should normalize black people coming to Mastodon, being safe and speaking their minds.
They might talk about internal discomfort and biases we might hold.
It's not their responsibility to educate us. It's our responsibility to create a place where black people are accepted.
I was looking at the news this morning and I think it's the perfect time to bring this up.
@ChaseTMAnderson I initially joined the Bird because I wanted to hear from people different than myself.
I wanted to be confronted with insights and ideas.
In a free society we don't fear ideas and thoughts.
And if we don't agree or see things quite the same, that's OK I'm not going to give you mess for it.
Thank you @ChaseTMAnderson for the truth! Let #Mastodon be a safe space for the #Minoritized to speak their minds. It is "not the minoritized person’s responsibility, to educate you, coddle you, to do the work for you." Normalize Black people coming to this app being safe to speak their minds. What we bring up might abut internal discomfort and biases that you might hold. That is not the minoritized person’s responsibility, though, to educate you, coddle you, to do the work for you. It is your responsibility to not create yet another space where Black people are marginalized or silenced.
I’ve been calculated about bringing this up and now is the time.

There’s something beautiful when you’re a minoritized person reading academic papers simply because you’re interested in the topic - when you don’t have to read papers because an attending or supervisor is going to berate you, not because you’re minoritized and must be over-prepared at all times because of peoples biases, etc.
Learning for the love of learning. I say this while reading psychiatry papers.
