If your solution to *any* problem starts with "If everybody would just..." then what you have is not a solution, it's a wish.
And it's not going to happen.
We need local solutions that can actually be implemented and will have good results in spite of the fact many or most people will not "just...." anything.

What kindness have you seen today?
I was sitting by a lock on the River Thames and I noticed a boat come through and then start to do a strange reverse manouver. Then the man driving the boat called out to someone on the other side of the river and asked her to press the button to close the gates.
I realised he was trying to reverse to press the button himself but when she kindly did it for him he carried on down the river.

I agree, as individuals if we dislike an account blocking is our choice, however some folk get out of control with their hate and rage--are very hurtful.
I read your post and I noticed your "freedom" hashtag.
You have the freedom to say and act however you choose just as we have the freedom to rely on a group of thoughtful and kind folk like Mark to protect the most vulnerable in the fediverse community.
IMO, #Community is the word that best describes the goal of Fediverse, and that means *together* we support and protect one another.
When we signed up we agreed to the community guidelines, and if we know if we hurt a member of the community we can be banished.
Many of the folk here don't want another free for all twitter., I know I don't.
