Excellent article about roads!
Excellent article about roads!
Most of the time, cars don't drive. They stand around and take up space that cannot be used otherwise during that time.
For over two decades, Yarra has been one of naarm Melbourne's best areas to walk & ride. A newly elected conservative Yarra council is eyeing up removing vital infrastructure

@EUCommission "Cycling is about creating a healthier, more sustainable future." Now please share this wisdom with national governments, economy leaders, police, and media platforms.
By chance, I’m in Brussels today on #WorldCarFree day…
Amazing to see so many kids enjoying active, independent mobility across the entire city - and so much space for #OpenStreet markets & neighbourhood activities!
The entire city feels like a #kidicalmass bikeride!
The wild thing is: A reduction of 68-86% of energy usage in the global north is entirely possible, going for the low-hanging fruits and policies that make it easier for people to adjust their lifestyles:
Think it like this:
- the first 10-20% are really easy and cheap things (like fixing leaks or installing some switches for appliances that consume a lot of energy), we almost won't even notice.
- The next 10-20% tranche comes with a some technological improvements (efficient light bulbs, thermal insulation, etc.). here are some investment costs, but the savings quickly pay out And there's a lot of money laying around (#TaxTheRich : https://www.tax-the-rich.eu/)
- speaking about the rich: a very, very small segment of the population has totally inacceptable consumption patterns. If the richest 10% would decrease their emissions to the level of the *average European*, over 30 % of the total emissions would be saved...
- For the next 10-20%, we need some adjustments of policiess and lifestyle: #MobilityTransition, #AgroecologyTransition, Energy... you get the point. A moderate shift of our society towards #degrowth . People changing their behaviour, the typical stuff: mainly plant-based diet, no car where possible, drastic reduction of air travel, banning advertising of emission-intensive luxury goods...
All this stuff could be achieved without greater turmoil and maintaining most of the commodities of our era
Yes, the more we achieve, the more difficult it gets. The last tranche will require really deep cuts (ask your grandmother how life was in the 50-60s). But meanwhile, the more just and equal society becomes, the easier it will be to get to the bottom by collective action. It will be some while until people start again to own and use stuff collectively, take responsibility in their neighbourhood council and look out for each other. But we will be rewarded with an amazing improvement of life quality.
PD: I didn't even include the development of new technologies. I am highly sceptical of technocratic illusions, but there might be some potential. Taking into account the almost inevitable Jevons paradox (increasing efficiency leads to higher utilization of the resource= you are more likely to travel larger distances if your car is more efficient), there might still be some positive effect on efficiency. Maybe bringing down consumption by a single digit percentage?
Mixed feelings.
On the one hand, I wish African countries to have their own industry, otherwise neocolonialism will never end.
On the other hand, SUVs are really one of the last things humanity needs at the moment (a product of US fossil capitalism aiming at frustrated urban middle and upper class dudes) and I wish that all companies producing them to go bankrupt as quick as possible. A strong car industry is also a political liability: these guys lobby the governments away from meaningful environmental protection,
I heard that Kenya's urban population is very quick in adopting small electric vehicles like e-scooters, so maybe there's a window of opportunity. But China dominates the e-mobility industry because of reasons, so it won't be easy to build up alternatives.
And although I don't have any sympathies with international investment funds losing money, it's a bad signal and African industry development will have it more difficult to attain funding.
Haha, although I thought that I don't know what to say, I said already too much
Thanks for sharing this interesting, but sadly "normal" data!
#MobilityTransition and #degrowth will need both push and pull factors: less subsidies of air travel, more & easier trains, change of mindset. While lobbbying the administrations for the infrastructure and legal framework, there is also some stuff we can push within the organizations/institutions (job, university, sports federation, municipality) we have access to, by changing the default: hybrid conferences, train for business trips ("of course it is still possible to go by car or airplane, but you need to provide a justification on formsheet X34"), school trips by train/bike...
Anyway, the reason I wanted to answer was to praise both your examples of #DataVisialization which are very illustrative. But then I got carried away...
Let us discuss mobility. How do usually go to the railway station? The options are grouped by emissions.
You get instant gratification of an interim result when you answer the poll.

When we're riding public transit my #dog often approaches strangers to see if they like him and will pet him.
Today someone really took a liking to him and also started a conversation with me. In a side-sentence he mentioned hardships in his past and he did look like he was not in the best state mentally.
In the end he said this made his day.
My dog often puts smiles on peoples faces and I can't imagine they were all having a good day anyway.
I'm really proud of my dog for providing this service.
One you won't experience in cars or planes btw.
This is an excellent film about the experience of travelling around #Southampton for people of different ages and #abilities
Night trains in Europe are coming back
Discussed necessary changes in individual mobility with my SO yesterday and he said something, which kept me thinking: "There are no ads portraying successful people commuting by train."
Radical thought: What if, in the light of climate change, we ban ads for vehicles running on fossil fuels like we banned ads for smoking?
