Hear me out.
Trump’s tariff ploy is a last ditch effort to de-grow the global economy, so as to drastically reduce fossil fuel consumption & climate change. The dislocations will require a global “New Deal” ushering in socialist programs to ensure equity and justice.
The world will have to demilitarize in order to refocus resources on human needs.
No?!
Well, why not do this anyway, since the jackass started it?

@midide but in terms of wider consumption patterns, beyond power generation, fossil fuel usage, rather than declining, also continues to increase

While a shift to renewables is welcome, it only matters if it *replaces* fossil fuels, not if it provides additional capacity. Until we understand the implications of living on a finite planet - endless economic growth is a cancer that is killing us - we continue to hurtle towards climate & nature collapse

indeed. Also, more unemployment means more people loosing their homes = greater demand and prices for rentals.

Recessions are the most painful means of #degrowth. but it remains true that degrowth is only thing that has ever brought carbon emissions down. m.ai6yr.org/@exador23/11429524

If we ever come out of this, hopefully we can have more coherent degrowth policies like 3 or 4 day work weeks, and UBI.

Every dip in our steady increase in carbon emissions in the past 50 years has been the result of a recession rather than environmental policy. Mid 70s was Nixon's stagflation economy and OPEC. Early 80s was Savings & Loan crisis + austerity + farm crisis. Early 90s was more austerity + Mideast Wars + tight fiscal policy. The flattening in 2000 was the dot com bubble bursting. 2008 was the global financial crisis & real estate bubble. And 2020 was the pandemic. #degrowth is the only thing that has really worked to reduce emissions. unfortunately each example has been forced degrowth via economic recession. It would be more pleasant for everyone to do it in a planned considered fashion, but an economic crash will have the same effect.

Capitalism cannot be allowed to continue.

As long as capitalism is in charge, then Business As Usual is inevitable.

But Business As Usual can only lead to collapse — of the ecosystem, of the economy, of governments, and of modern society.

Collapse, starting slowly and then growing, means tragedies beyond anything you have ever imagined.

If capitalism is still the dominating force ten years from now, then it’s too late. Collapse will happen. It may in fact be too late already — but we will never know unless capitalism is rejected and #degrowth is adopted.
