"The Environmental Protection Agency just hid data that mapped out the locations of thousands of dangerous chemical facilities, after chemical industry lobbyists demanded that the Trump administration take down the public records.

The webpage was quietly shut down late Friday, according to records viewed by The Lever — stripping away what advocates say was critical information on the secretive chemical plants at highest risk of disaster across the United States.

The data was made public last year through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Risk Management Program, which oversees the country’s highest-risk chemical facilities. These chemical plants deal with dangerous, volatile chemicals — like those used to make pesticides, fertilizers, and plastics — and are responsible for dozens of chemical disasters every year.

A spokesperson for Coming Clean, an environmental health group focusing on the chemical industry, told The Lever that the organization was “surprised” to see the webpage taken down and that its staff had accessed the data as recently as Friday morning.

“We know that industry had suggested it, so it seems like [regulators] are following industry’s lead,” the spokesperson added."

#Trump #EPA’s Next Move: Making It Harder to Sue for Getting Cancer from #Roundup

The corporation behind Roundup #herbicide has paid out nearly $11 billion in lawsuits. Now it's backing an EPA rule that would stop the bleeding.

by Schuyler Mitchell, March 21 2025

"Last August, 11 industry-friendly red states, led by Nebraska and Iowa, submitted a 436-page petition asking the agency to amend its labeling rules under the Federal #Insecticide, #Rodenticide, and Fungicide Act, or #FIFRA. The proposed rule change would explicitly prohibit states from labeling #pesticides and #herbicides with warnings about cancer, #BirthDefects, and reproductive harm if those notices contradict the EPA’s risk assessment.

"The states made clear that their ultimate goal is to thwart future lawsuits against pesticide manufacturers. Their petition argued that recent court rulings have created a 'gap in FIFRA’s regulatory framework' that the proposed rule change would plug.

"In January, in a move initiated by the Biden administration, the EPA took a first step of accepting public comment on the rule-making petition, with a deadline of March 24 — though this step is exploratory and does not mean a new rule will be issued. Still, the EPA’s decision could have disastrous consequences if Donald Trump’s second administration is as friendly to the #ChemicalIndustry as it was in his first.

"'It’s telling of the lengths that pesticide manufacturers will go to make sure that nothing interferes with their profit margins,' said Brett Hartl, government affairs director at the Center for Biological Diversity. 'There’s a reality that the industry itself generates much of the data, and they say it’s safe, and then EPA approves that determination.”

Addressing PFAS decontamination: The cost of policy failure

There is an increased awareness of the costs of PFAS to public health and the environment.

What a bunch of hooey! Yes, Uranium is natural and should be kept in the ground!!! smh Hey, remember the ads that used to tout, "DDT is good for me!" Yeah, about that. Should we fear ALL chemicals? Of course not. More like, should we fear being LIED to by #BigChemical, who have told us stuff was safe when in fact it wasn't. It seems the author doesn't want to acknowledge the harm done by greedy capitalists, and maybe she should start drinking Roundup to see how "safe" it is. smh.

"Uranium is natural."

"Silent Spring by Rachel Carson is an expertly written #environmental science book published in 1962. It focuses on the documentation of detrimental effects that the haphazard use of #pesticides has on the #environment. In the book, she is vocal about her criticism of #ChemicalIndustry which she blames for the rampant #disinformation that is aimed at ensuring that public official accepts their claims unquestioningly (Carson and Lear). Carson had earlier focused all her attention on conservation efforts and in particular in environmental problems caused pesticides. The result of her new found passion culminated in the writing of Silent Spring (1962) that brought out her environmental concerns with the aim of sharing them with the American public."

What Were We Thinking? The Top 10 Most Dangerous Ads

A look back at 10 colossally painful advertisements.

by Hunter Oatman-Stanford

"While some faulty campaigns were merely the victims of evolving scientific knowledge, many blatantly ignored facts in their race for the #dollar, using so-called experts to promote products terrible for public health, like #cigarettes. Revered professionals like doctors and scientists routinely told us precisely the wrong things to do, as they are likely still doing today."

#PFAS are forever?

How the #ChemicalIndustry is fighting back against regulation

13.07.2023

"Corporate Europe Observatory uncovers the story of how the toxics industry is fighting back against the upcoming regulation of PFAS or 'forever chemicals', which are found in everything from frying pans to food packaging. Using access to documents requests and LobbyFacts data we show how chemical companies paint themselves as reasonable, concerned actors, whilst at the same time privately pushing hard for exemptions for their own PFAS products, and warning in dramatic terms of the economic fallout of banning them. Meanwhile the real catastrophe – the impacts on human health and the environment – as well as the costs of clean up, continue apace.

"The companies producing PFAS knew for decades about the toxicity of these chemicals, but they chose to do nothing about it. Recent academic analysis of previously secret documents from DuPont and 3M shows that companies knew PFAS were 'highly toxic when inhaled and moderately toxic when ingested' by 1970, 40 years before the public health community. The analysis further notes that the industry used several strategies also common to #tobacco, #pharma, and other industries to influence science and regulation, including 'suppressing unfavorable research and distorting public discourse'.

"According to documents analysed by the news show #Zembla, #DuPont knew 30 years ago that it was seriously contaminating the groundwater under the #Dordrecht plant in the #Netherlands and in the surrounding area with large quantities of toxic and carcinogenic PFAS. Sidenote In 2022 it was recommended not to eat vegetables or fruit coming from gardens within a one kilometre radius of this PFAS factory."
