“I have thought a lot about the Western attitude toward the natural world and wondered at what point we began to think we had outsmarted it. I think it was the Enlightenment, and though I can hardly speak ill of the Enlightenment, that new mindset combined with the industrial revolution started a process of seeing #nature as a resource rather than something with its own deep wisdom.” #geology #MarciaBjornerud #TurningToStone #Atmos #environment #climate

🇩🇪 #ATMOS has few competitors, of which #VardaSpace and #InversionSpace both apply parachutes 🪂 for the final descent of their return capsules. #Phoenix doesn’t require parachutes due to its large surface area and low mass, allowing its shape to essentially act as a parachute. The ballistic coefficient is lower than #NASA’s #LOFTID demonstrator. The next Phoenix to launch will carry "green #propulsion; ethane and nitrous oxide” nasaspaceflight.com/2025/06/at

A little cat-related news today …

Lola Falafel’s unquenchable urge to explore – and to perch on the highest possible place – has twice led her to jump on top of my upward-facing #Atmos speakers.

This, of course, is problematic. When she lands on the speaker cloth (a thin frame held on the speaker by magnets)

the cloth slides off, Lola slides off, and #Catastrophe ensues.

So I made protective covers for the two center Atmos speakers. (It really is excellent wire mesh!)

At last, I’ve got all six Klipsch Dolby Atmos speakers sitting on top of the 7.1 system.

The first photo was taken from the back of the studio, standing up. It’s a little distorted, because it’s a panorama.

(if you’re viewing this on a phone, turn it sideways to landscape mode!)

The second photo is sitting near the sweet spot, facing the rear – and of course, Lola having a nap. (The grill cloths are on for this one.)

The amp is next!

If you're interested in #DolbyAudio upgrades of your favorite music(whether #Atmos or any of its other multichannel formats) these are probably two useful resources to track what’s available and/or what gets added:

With the addition of #HDMI #passthrough in #macOS15 I’m finding renewed use for my surround receiver that started gathering dust in recent years. A sample recent submission was RTJ3: music.apple.com/us/album/run-t A classic that got an Atmos upgrade a few years ago (yes audiophiles, you can choose your preferred mix) is Kind of Blue: music.apple.com/us/album/kind-

Anyway it's interesting to compare traditional stereo and surround mixes. What other surround mixes are worth checking out?

FTR, #atmos is utter garbage.

No, I don't care that you got conned into buying $2k of a shitty, plasticky, disposable system that added two extra channels, without a decent return/benefit for it.

"Atmos" is just (tldr) bouncing sound from the ceiling to simulate sound coming from above. Unless you are listening to the system in a room within the very, very narrow specs of ceiling height, material, etc, you just wasted bandwidth, materials (plastic, wood, wires, etc), and my patience. Even when configured to optimal specs, atmos sounds like dogshit.

#SurroundSound rules: K.I.S.S.

Can't beat *wired* speakers, connected to a decent, simple amp, A/V receivers are ok, see rule about amplifier.
90% of everything works with 5.1;
No, none of the "newer" codecs are better than DTS HD Master or Dolby TrueHD;
No, two subwoofers are not necessarily better than one;
Bluetooth is utter shit;
HDMI ARC is shit, and HDMI after 1.3 is about the same.
Korean companies never made anything audio that sounded remotely good or was not disposable crap;
PMPO rating is a scam;
More wattage does NOT mean better sound;
Louder doesn't mean better;
Brand cables are a scam;
Looks of a speaker don't mean shit for the sound;
More expensive doesn't mean better.

Just set up some height channels with some old speakers I had collecting dust. Ran the YPAO set-up and turned on an atmospheric scifi show. Sounds amazing except for a small crackle in one of the speakers..... 🤦‍♂️

Now trying to convince myself not to buy new speakers to replace the old ones....

Edit - Will power lasted about an hour. Dang.

Looks like tvOS 18.1 beta is available. 18 didn’t bring audio passthrough, and I’m not expecting it in 18.1. I know Apple really wants to control the audio experience and all that, but it’s breaking things, not making it better.

In any case, let’s take a look…

Well we may be considering a new TV to replace our aging 50” Sony Bravia with (bloody expensive) sound bar and sub woofer.

The other half has been impressed with the LG 60” in the holiday cottage.

She is thinking that we could go with a model with Dolby #ATMOS to eliminate the sound bar.

The model which is temping her is the #Panasonic TX-65MZ2000B (2023). This seems to have built in %Netflix, Amazon Prime and Apple TV. John Lewis have £500 off on it at the moment plus do a 5 year guarantee on it.

it seems to get really top reviews.

I want to leave #Sony behind as we’ve had some issues with them, #Samsung reportedly now put adverts in the guide.

Any thoughts appreciated.

My close friend Johannes shot a #MadMax Fan Film called Hope and Glory a year ago and in September it will be shown at Zoo Palast in #Berlin in #Dolby #Atmos (English). I would appreciate some #boosts so we can get some more people to come since it’s quite a big cinema! Will be a double feature with the short film (45min) + Fury Road. zoopalast.premiumkino.de/film/
