bachelor buttons against a white picket fence
this morning is the first time I’ve seen bees on the flowers. I’m not an expert but I tried to ID the critter—maybe a green sweat bee? look at the size of the pollen baskets!

FIRST #MONARCH (that I have seen) IN MY YARD!
Woooo!
I learned in a class the other day that particularly for common milkweed, it's important to plant it toward the edges of your property, because monarchs use *visual* cues to find it. So they really need to see the entire plant, not obscured by any other plants.
I let asclepias syriaca grow at-will in my front yard for this reason. Some of my #Asclepias gets to be between 10 and 13 feet tall!!!
This year, it's not blooming as robustly as I would expect, though. I'm not sure what's going on. (You can see in the video how the plant is blooming, and that is nowhere near normal.)
I have another monarch class coming up on the 19th -- with Chip Taylor his own self -- so I'm excited about that.

A couple of small butterflies on the purple coneflowers yesterday.
A Red Admiral and a Meadow Fritillary (I think).
Dude is coming back a tonne heavier than when he left the hive this ayem.
Non-native honey bees are outcompeting native pollinators, consuming up to 80% of available pollen daily at key biodiversity hotspots. This threatens food sources for native bees and could disrupt local ecosystems.

…are the #bees are too. So as you reach for some liquid refreshment remember to top up our #wild friends too.
And be considerate and vigilant around the sources of #water you provide and keep in your garden/yard.
Please pass this on.
Thank you good people!

#water is a source of essential #nutrients for #bees and this explains their preference for ‘dirty’ water sources containing organic matter, algae etc.
Indeed #honeybees have the ability to and will change their preferred source of #water to an alternative in order to…

Nature is full of networks of interacting species: predators and prey, hosts and parasites, plants and pollinators. Stone et al. analyze patterns in these networks to help us understand how biological communities develop, and to predict interactions for as yet unsampled species.

The 2025 International Monarch Monitoring Blitz is coming up from July 25 to August 3. This annual event invites individuals and organizations across Canada, Mexico and the United States to participate in a trinational effort to collect data on monarch #butterflies (Danaus plexippus) and milkweed plants (Asclepias spp.), essential for the species' survival.
Organized by ten partner organizations across North America, the Blitz encourages everyone to contribute to #MonarchButterfly conservation through simple, yet impactful, actions.

Look at this cool new wasp species for the garden! Extremely tiny (less than 3 mm?) and shiny. From the Genus Caenochrysis (undetermined species), it is a tiny, solitary parasitoid wasp, here sitting on my heall-all.
@8ofpentacles Yes. The pollinators are enjoying the mint, hyssop, and the day. #pollinators.

Bees develop asymmetrical wings when they experience stress during their development.
Very differently shaped left and right wings is an indicator of stress from an external factor which affects normal growth.
