Today I actually made a few sessions at the 4th FediForum.

Two were about journalism.

The First was how newsrooms use or rather don’t quite use the Fediverse. Not yet at least. And how it’s all about metrics and tracking to make sure the effort is worth the squeeze. It was organized by Ben Werdmuller from ProPublica.

The second was about how we can get more journalists and newsrooms to use the Fediverse instead of Twitter. This was organized by by Dan Gillmor.

Both were very good discussions and about a topic/industry that I’m very passionate about.

The other one, that I made, was about how to make finding people and accounts easier on a decentralized web. Above my pay grade a bit, but very interesting. It was with Andy Piper and his colleague from Mastodon Development.

And the last one was about how to monetize our feeds. Check out Sub.Club! It’s pretty slick!

Tomorrow is the last day. Can’t wait!

We’re Demanding That #Newsrooms Improve Their 2024 #Election Coverage

..."On August 12, 2024 we sent the below open letter, along with our first batch of 3,000+ signatures, to the executives, publishers, and union leaders of major media organizations. It’s not too late to add your name and join us in demanding pro-democracy election coverage.

Dear American Media Executives, Publishers, and J"...

Media And DemocracyAdd Your Name: Pro-Democracy 2024 Election CoverageSign our open letter to media executives and publishers demanding they adopt guidelines for 2024 election coverage that emphasize pro-truth, pro-voting, and pro-democracy practices.

Another element to this: In the past 15 years #newsrooms have grown accustomed to “reporting” on online conversations that achieve critical mass.

How could you blame them? It’s easy. Cheap. Fast. Copy embed codes. Write transitions. Count those #clicks!

So now there’s this habit, this need to talk about an element of the zeitgeist, lest they get left behind on the secondary memes.

It’s modern #political cartooning.

Bluesky Social · Popehat (@kenwhite.bsky.social)My theory is that journalists are so agitated over the couch joke because, as they’ve demonstrated, they have no idea how to report on something that’s not true. [contains quote post or other embedded content]

No #NewstodonFriday from us this week because, frankly, we're going on vacation soon and have stacks of other stuff to do. In its stead, we're recommending this @FediFollows' thread below, which will help you find fantastic news organizations to follow. Share a newsroom's fedi handle in the comments, or a favorite story you've discovered here, and we'll boost it.

"…#newsrooms are going to disappear. Changes to #socialmedia and the advent of #generativeAI threaten their businesses and the impact of their work. They need to own their online presences outright and build direct relationships with their communities—and they need to do it now.
Experimentation & innovation are key. Newsrooms can discover practical ways to navigate these challenges by testing new strategies, technologies & mindsets."

#AI #GenerativeAI #Newsrooms #Journalism #Media #News: "As soon as we started doing interviews, my suspicions were confirmed: a lot of these guidelines were made from the top down. They were made individually by an editor-in-chief or sometimes by parent companies, without any consultation of journalists.

How can we create guidelines from the bottom up? How can we create guidelines involving journalists and all the stakeholders involved in news production? It shouldn’t surprise us that journalists are still making decisions based on their gut feeling. Even with all of these guidelines in place, journalists are still going to make decisions based on what they and their community feel it’s important.

If you impose guidelines from the top down, they are not going to be very effective because journalism is based on gut feeling. So we need to encourage newsrooms to have a conversation with their journalists and ask them about how these technologies should be put in place."

Reuters Institute for the Study of JournalismAI newsroom guidelines look very similar, says a researcher who studied them. He thinks this is bad newsTomás Dodds, who’s looked at 37 AI rules in 17 countries, warns against “rigid, top-down” principles and calls to celebrate a diversity of approaches

#AI #GenerativeAI #Journalism #Media #News #Newsrooms: "To empower journalists and editors with the ability to efficiently and effectively evaluate and select tools to adopt into their practice, we must develop AI evaluation strategies that are both relevant to the journalism context, and adaptable to support evaluation across different types of newsrooms and practices.

Here we propose a framework to help guide evaluations of the uses of AI tools in journalism. Our framework suggests that tools be evaluated along three axes: (1) the quality of AI model outputs, based on editorial interests and goals (2) quality of interaction with AI applications, based on needs and work processes of users, and (3) ethical alignment, based on professional values and newsroom standards. We also propose that practitioners and researchers collaborate on the development of standards to evaluate these aspects of AI in the newsroom." generative-ai-newsroom.com/blu

#Newsrooms are so unprepared for #AI
You'd think they'd obtain permission from a source for photo?

Major Australian news outlets appear to have unknowingly published AI-manipulated images of Barnaby Joyce, raising questions about how prepared newsrooms are for the technology widespread’s use.

“I presume the original, un-AI’d version depicts Barnaby soberly standing up and sipping a glass of sparkling mineral water, does it?"

Crikey · Australian media has been publishing AI-manipulated Barnaby Joyce imagesEdited images of Joyce lying on a Canberra footpath were published by The Australian, 2GB, 9NEWS and other outlets run by Australia's biggest media companies.

And if you’re right here …

“The reality is that there will be an influx of deepfakes and misinformation flowing into our newsrooms at a scale, at a speed, at a level of sophistication that will be staggering.

“She said broadcasters need to figure out new guardrails, as well as bolster standards and protocols, in order to protect both their credibility and their viewers.”

… you’re behind the curve.
