In these trying times of civil unrest, protests or natural disasters, it might be difficult to stay connected, but fortunately there are activitists developing mesh network for such cases - Mycelium Mesh Project.

A #meshnetwork is a local area network topology in which the infrastructure nodes (i.e. bridges, switches, and other infrastructure devices) connect directly, dynamically and non-hierarchically to as many other nodes as possible and cooperate with one another to efficiently route data to and from clients.
…Mesh networks dynamically self-organize and self-configure…This in turn contributes to fault-tolerance and reduced maintenance costs.

"Reticulum is the cryptography-based networking stack for building local and wide-area networks with readily available hardware. Reticulum can continue to operate even in adverse conditions with very high latency and extremely low bandwidth.

The vision of Reticulum is to allow anyone to operate their own sovereign communication networks, and to make it cheap and easy to cover vast areas with a myriad of independent, interconnectable and autonomous networks.

Reticulum is Unstoppable Networks for The People.

Reticulum is not one network. It is a tool for building thousands of networks. Networks without kill-switches, surveillance, censorship and control. Networks that can freely interoperate, associate and disassociate with each other.

Reticulum is Networks for Human Beings.

From a users perspective, Reticulum allows the creation of applications that respect and empower the autonomy and sovereignty of communities and individuals. Reticulum provides secure digital communication that cannot be subjected to outside control, manipulation or censorship.

Reticulum enables the construction of both small and potentially planetary-scale networks, without any need for hierarchical or beaureucratic structures to control or manage them, while ensuring individuals and communities full sovereignty over their own network segments.

It is not possible to establish unencrypted links in Reticulum networks.
It is not possible to send unencrypted packets to any destinations in the network."

When I flew back home, I had to fly over my hometown and catch a connecting flight back in.

Using a GPS-enabled #meshtastic node, I successfully managed to send a message from myself in the air down to a node I own and control on the ground while flying over.

These ad hoc comms networks are cool!

@Polychrome #Qaul comes to my mind, it's in development for quite some time: qaul.net/. But haven't really used it myself yet. What I did use successfully is @mwarning 's simplistic #Meshenger: github.com/meshenger-app/meshe
But despite its name it doesn't have a built-in #mesh feature, you'd need to use it over a layer 2 #MeshNetwork like @batadv / #Freifunk. Similarly, for texting instead of voice @pidgin's #Bonjour Chat comes to my mind (but I think there is no Android app for it yet?)

GlowLight Update 💡

in 2004 we dreamed of a "free internet" that would actually connect you directly with the home hosted website of the local shop/library/friend without going through big commercial providers, using wifi to #meshnetwork the world ... now we just hope people realise their minds are captive of ad-driven fascists foreign megacorp and try to escape in sufficient numbers before it all explode ...

yes, #cyberpunk is here and now, and it's not even as fun as in the books ...

One of my first open source patches was for @pidgin, to fix some #IPv6 and #Bonjour / #mDNS issues in it. Bonjour chat and file transfer would allow to do so without needing a central server while we were on our decentral, layer 2 #batman_adv #meshnetwork at #Freifunk. Unfortunately we had to start filtering all #multicast in 2013 due to increased network sizes. Now, 11 years later with many new changes in #batman_adv and #Gluon we could reenable multicast at @ffhl. And Bonjour chat works again!

#networking question: Experiencing internet drops every ~5 mins for ~30 secs on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet; Wi-Fi signal remains. Setup: AT&T Fiber 1Gbps, AT&T modem with ASUS AX3000 router + extender, ~50 devices connected. I've tried: Restarted devices; router ping stable, ping to 1.1.1.1 is not; Ethernet to modem works, but only when router is not. Think router is overloaded. Any advice? Is 50 devices too many? Upgrade router or try mesh? Thanks! #techsupport #router #WiFi #meshnetwork #askfedi
