#Reticulum

I currently read "Anathem" (5⭐️!) by Neal Stephenson, and came across this gem.

(Note: The novel takes place on an earth-like planet and uses some special words:
#Reticulum ~= internet; syndev = syntactic device ~= computer)

„Early in the Reticulum — thousands of years ago — it became almost useless because it was cluttered with faulty, obsolete, or downright misleading information,” Sammann said.

“Crap, you once called it,” I reminded him.

“Yes—a technical term. So crap filtering became important. Businesses were built around it. Some of those businesses came up with a clever plan to make more money: they poisoned the well. They began to put crap on the Reticulum deliberately, forcing people to use their products to filter that crap back out. They created syndevs whose sole purpose was to spew crap into the Reticulum. But it had to be good crap.”

“What is good crap?” Arsibalt asked in a politely incredulous tone.

“Well, bad crap would be an unformatted document consisting of random letters. Good crap would be a beautifully typeset, well-written document that contained a hundred correct, verifiable sentences and one that was subtly false. It’s a lot harder to generate good crap. At first they had to hire humans to churn it out. They mostly did it by taking legitimate documents and inserting errors—swapping one name for another, say. But it didn’t really take off until the military got interested.”

“As a tactic for planting misinformation in the enemy’s reticules, you mean,” Osa said. “This I know about. You are referring to the Artificial Inanity (#AI) programs of the mid–First Millennium A.R.“

A plot showing the #radio #frequency #spectrum usage rules in Germany around 800 MHz, relevant for #lora use in #reticulum & #meshtastic.

#frequenzplan "Eintrag" number on the vertical axis corresponds to the "Eintrag" number listed in the link. If anyone knows the definition of "geringer Reichweite" in Eintrag 251004, please let me know. Is it permitted to create a #lora mesh network in the 863 to 870 MHz band in DE?

Around the same period there is also in Poland #solpunk gathering. (19-26 aug)

Maybe we can establish connection with #reticulum over lora #lowtech mesh networks /?!

First this weekend continue our training in tbd.camp

(a back-up to an eventual authoritarian-style #internetshutdown will need a system installed and functioning before it happens)

The protocol design and reference implementation for #Reticulum was carried out between 2014 and 2022 by Mark Qvist:

"The #Reticulum Protocol is the shared property of all people, I contribute it to the #publicdomain.

Dedicated with hope and belief in the future freedom and prosperity of all, on Earth and beyond.

Thank You"

Working on something for Reticulum/NomadNet. It's a little script that takes CalDAV subscriptions and turns them into linked micron pages. If the internet ceased to function in your town tomorrow, what networked features would you like to see that could be supported by 1.07kbps?

"Reticulum is the cryptography-based networking stack for building local and wide-area networks with readily available hardware. Reticulum can continue to operate even in adverse conditions with very high latency and extremely low bandwidth.

The vision of Reticulum is to allow anyone to operate their own sovereign communication networks, and to make it cheap and easy to cover vast areas with a myriad of independent, interconnectable and autonomous networks.

Reticulum is Unstoppable Networks for The People.

Reticulum is not one network. It is a tool for building thousands of networks. Networks without kill-switches, surveillance, censorship and control. Networks that can freely interoperate, associate and disassociate with each other.

Reticulum is Networks for Human Beings.

From a users perspective, Reticulum allows the creation of applications that respect and empower the autonomy and sovereignty of communities and individuals. Reticulum provides secure digital communication that cannot be subjected to outside control, manipulation or censorship.

Reticulum enables the construction of both small and potentially planetary-scale networks, without any need for hierarchical or beaureucratic structures to control or manage them, while ensuring individuals and communities full sovereignty over their own network segments.

It is not possible to establish unencrypted links in Reticulum networks.
It is not possible to send unencrypted packets to any destinations in the network."

Spain power cuts - fortunately we are somewhat prepared with solar electricity, cash supplies, 15000 litres of water storage, fuel in car & about a months worth of dehydrated meals 😆. In case of a zombie apocalypse 🧟‍♂️or natural disaster we also have walkie talkies, LoRa radios & I have been developing off-grid networks (experimenting with #Meshtastic, #Meshcore & #Reticulum) 🤣.

Bit of a wake up call though - prepare for these events no matter how far fetched they seem. They can and do happen.
