Some whale #linocut prints for #WorldWhaleDay! I’ve had the great privilege of seeing humpbacks and orcas (and other species) when working at sea. They seem as curious about us as we are of them.
I would love to see the blue whale and narwhals, in my other prints, too.
I hope we always live in a world where whales can thrive.

Have you ever wondered why whales breach?
Researchers speculate whales likely breach for various reasons, which help them communicate, deter threats, successfully forage and mate, and, in general, survive in their dynamic underwater world.

Rare footage reveals intimate family lives of blue whales

Dr. Karen Edyvane: “From newborn calves and nursing mothers to amorous adults in courtship, the waters of #TimorLeste really are providing #BlueWhale scientists with some of our first glimpses into the private lives of one of the world’s largest but most elusive #animals"
What you’re seeing here is the first-ever footage of a blue whale calf nursing and rare video of blue whale courtship!
Evidence of blue whales’ reproductive and calving behaviour has remained largely "unknown" in the scientific community until now, but a project led by Charles Darwin University and The Australian National University has gathered footage capturing this behaviour.
The footage was taken in Timor-Leste’s waters, where long-term monitoring is providing critical insights into the ecology of the Austral-Indonesian population of pygmy blue whales.

"For almost two decades the team has been using free-floating #sonobuoys as listening stations, to detect, track and record Antarctic #BlueWhale and other #whale sounds. Spending more than eight months at sea, on seven voyages, the team has traveled more than 145,510 kilometers and monitored nearly 3,900 hours of sound from listening stations all around #Antarctica."

The Southern Ocean upwelling is a mecca for whales and tuna, with its nutrient-rich water supporting a prosperous ecosystem.
The environmental importance of the upwelling is one reason the federal government declared a much-reduced zone for offshore wind turbines in the region, which thankfully covers only one-fifth of the area initially proposed.
Here's why the Southern Ocean upwelling is worth celebrating… https://ausgeo.co/upwelling

"The Great Southern Australian Coastal #Upwelling System is an upward current of water over vast distances along #Australia’s southern coast. It brings nutrients from deeper waters to the surface. This nutrient-rich water supports a rich #ecosystem that attracts iconic species like the southern #BluefinTuna and #BlueWhale"

• Tasmanian research found seismic blasting also triggers extensive death in #plankton, including #krill, which are crucial foundations of #MarineFoodWebs, from more than a kilometre away.
There is a proposal for seismic blasting over 45,000 sq km of ocean between #Victoria and #Tasmania by joint venture #TGS/#SLB-Schlumberger , which would see seismic blasting over commonwealth #MarineParks and #endangered #BlueWhale feeding areas.
