@lauren Brilliant. (And funny). I published a paper in 2014 on emerging security threats from #AI, especially #autonomous systems. I called the problem “the psychopathology of intelligent machines” and used your Hal example. (A fair number of people reacted in bizarre ways during my presentation (one even throwing a chair!) If you know enough about AI, it is not hard to see the mechanisms which would explain Hal’s maladaptive behavior. In the years since, I think every one of the new fault modes I predicted has actually occurred, either in lab tests or in the wild. You’re fair in saying today’s AIs cater to the dark side, but it is mostly from AI developers’ sloth, not malevolence.

“The UK’s AI Borders: #Anduril’s #Autonomous #Surveillance #Towers

@UKLabour

“Criminalising people arriving via irregular routes has been a number one priority for successive UK governments. These silent, ever-watching towers are a physical marker of where the #Hostile #Environment begins”

Škoda Group will deliver 46 trolleybuses to #Esslingen, #Germany, as part of a €41.4 million contract to support the city's transition to emission-free public transport. The vehicles, which will be delivered by 2026, include 12-metre and 18-metre models, with an option for 15 more. Equipped with batteries for up to 25 km of #autonomous operation and regenerative braking, the #trolleybuses will feature enhanced passenger comfort, including comfortable seating, electric ramps, and onboard Wi-Fi. The new fleet will help Esslingen achieve its goal of climate neutrality by 2040, making it one of the first #German cities with fully emission-free local #transport. Škoda’s role in Germany’s emission-free #mobility market continues to grow, with projects like the world’s longest tram for Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH.

The #European Commission has welcomed an agreement to modernise EU #driving licence rules, aiming to improve road safety and reduce administrative burdens. Key changes include digital driving licences, an EU-wide accompanied driving scheme for 17-year-olds, and a probationary period for novice drivers. The Directive also introduces checks on drivers’ physical and mental fitness and focuses on safer interaction with vulnerable road users. It aligns licences with advancements like #autonomous vehicles and #zero-emission cars. Additionally, licences from certain third countries will be recognised across the #EU. The Directive will be adopted soon, with national implementation required within four years, contributing to the EU’s Vision Zero goal of reducing road deaths to zero by 2050.
