In these dark times I figured it was worthwhile to write something a little more light and hopeful. I love corny earnestness in #Christianity and so I wanted to share with you all a bit about my favorite examples of Retrofuturism enshrined in the liturgy of the Episcopal Church

US judge will not curb #immigration enforcement in places of #worship

A federal judge on Friday refused to limit the #Trump admin’s immigration enforcement activities in places of worship, ruling against a group of 27 #religious organizations that had sued the admin over its decision to drop a previous policy against enforcement in sensitive locations.

"No-one has been arrested in a #Quaker meeting house in living memory.

“This aggressive violation of our place of #worship and the forceful removal of young people holding a protest group meeting clearly shows what happens when a society criminalises #protest."

Police broke into a Quaker Meeting House last night (27 March) and arrested six young people holding a meeting over concerns for the #climate and #Gaza.

Following their paychecks, the morons of the right are happy to disavow almost anything (I am sure Johnson has at least three more grandmothers to sell, let alone countless progeny). Labour with ‘Lord’ Glassman don’t get off Scot free either.

I've been thinking about this for a while. I think, studying #physics is like trying to understand the nature and if there is truly a #religion or #spirituality, I think Physics would be the highest form of it and if there was what people call #god, then doing Physics would be the highest form of #worship. I don't believe in one, but if someone really believes in God i.e. #agnostic or #spiritual or #religious then they should study physics to get close to what they believe as god.

Continued thread

#DHS had restricted #immigration enforcement at “sensitive locations” for years. With some exceptions, agents had to obtain special approval for enforcement actions in certain places, including #schools, #hospitals, #churches & other places of #worship; #funerals, #weddings & other #religious ceremonies. In 2021, that list expanded to include other #HealthcareFacilities, #playgrounds, #SocialService facilities & #emergency response sites.

A quotation from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Men are idolaters, and want something to look at and kiss and hug, or throw themselves down before; they always did, they always will; and if you don’t make it of wood, you must make it of words, which are just as much used for idols as promissory notes are used for values.

Opening Prayers for the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany, Year C (February 9 2025)

Part of a series of opening prayers for Sundays in the Revised Common Lectionary. They take their inspiration from the Scripture readings in the Lectionary. Worship leaders are welcome to use them for worship, but if you print or display any part of them, please credit the author. Comments welcome.

The following prayers are for based on the readings for the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany, February 9, 2025.

Call to Prayer

The Psalmist says:

On the day I called, you answered me;

you increased my strength of soul.

Psalm 138.3

Let us pray.

Prayer of Approach and Confession

Holy, holy, holy,

Lord God of hosts-

you are the only holy God.

Source of life,

ground of our being,

creator of all:

you alone are worthy of our worship

in this holy place on this Sabbath day

and in loving service to our neighbours

wherever we are, every day of the week.

Above all lesser gods

we sing your praise

exalt your name

and give thanks

for your steadfast love and faithfulness.

We acknowledge that,

in the face of your holiness and power

we feel lost and unclean,

sinful people who feel unfit to be your people.

For we are too often blind and deaf to your call.

In silence, we remember our failings.

silence

Hear the message which has been proclaimed to us:

by the grace of God,

we are what we are-

people set free by God from sin

for the sake of Christ

who died, was buried, and raised to life for us.

Thanks be to God!

Holy God, by your Spirit

your grace is within us.

You will not forsake the work of your hands:

for you promise to preserve and deliver us.

You have brought us through

the waters of baptism

to land us safe with Christ

and now you call us to proclaim his love.

Help us to fish for men and women

who will join us in his boat.

Enable us to fulfil your purpose for us

and deliver us from your troubles.

We pray in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

@energisch_ @kibcol1049 When I was a Lutheran seminary student (lo, these several decades ago), our conversations sometimes turned to the health and safety of sharing the common cup for the Eucharist. Especially during flu season. We usually settled things by agreeing that 'studies had shown' that the wine's alcohol interacted with the gold and silver in the chalice to protect us from flu viruses and other pathogens another parish member might have left on the rim.

Now I wonder what the conversations are, adding in these reports about any amount of alcohol being a death threat.

Just a thought I had the other day that has me curious. For those who follow a particular religion or belief system, does yours include the concept of "worship"? Either as "mass worship" (going to church etc), or as individual "acts of worship", or other?
For instance, followers of some religions may worship their deity/deities, while others may honour or respect them in other ways that aren't considered worship (even though outsiders may call it worship, it isn't considered that by participants).
