As usual, follow the money. Just reprehensible🤬

#ICE detention isn’t just a bureaucratic nightmare. It’s a business

Companies like #CoreCivic and #GEOGroup receive government funding based on the number of people they detain, which is why they lobby for stricter #Immigration policies

It’s a lucrative business: CoreCivic made over $560M and GEO Group made more than $763M from Ice contracts

The more detainees, the more money they make. It stands to reason that these companies have no incentive to release people quickly

What I had experienced was finally starting to make sense

@Sustainable2050 Absolutely callous treatment by #ice. Happy to hear she's back. Why did the Canadian border guards turn her back, thoughl? (That's what is said at the end of the article.)

On another axis, I feel that this and other recent cases show that you need to be white for the media to write about such things... That seems to have also been the feeling of the (mostly brown-skinned) co-detainees of that Canadian woman, who gave her a lot of letters for their respective families, thinking that she'd be released much sooner than them. theguardian.com/us-news/2025/m
Or is that a result of my media choice? (I mostly read German and UK media.) I'd be happy to hear counterexamples.

The Guardian · I’m the Canadian who was detained by Ice for two weeks. It felt like I had been kidnappedBy Guardian staff reporter

This story by #JasmineMooney, a Canadian citizen with no criminal record who was held in #ICE detention for two weeks, came up in my @medium curation work today. Her experience is making international news, and I won't be surprised if more countries issue advisories against traveling to the U.S. after this. As I commented, I'm hopeful that her status as a conventionally attractive white Canadian woman brings more attention to the plight of others unjustly detained.
