#hydrocarbons

Almost all #hydrocarbons currently stem from fossil #fuels, but the method developed by the Cambridge-Berkeley team results in clean #chemicals and fuels made from CO2, water and glycerol – a common organic compound – without any additional carbon emissions.

A Crew Was Searching For Shipwrecks In Lake Michigan—But They Found Something Completely Different

“ • A survey of Lake Michigan located at least 40 large craters on the lakebed.
• Initial studies highlighted the spots as unknown shapes, but additional research revealed the craters are filled with marine life.
• Researchers expect to investigate further, seeing how these craters formed and if they’re really sinkholes…"

> Humans will survive but in a very different world. So what can we do about it? We can do what the so called “primitive” people are doing, arrest it. You don’t have to lift every drop of #HydroCarbons out of the earth. It could stay in the earth where it ought to be. And, we could devote our energies not to wasting as much #FossilFuel as we can but to developing alternatives which will allow a #SurvivableSociety. It is technically feasible, it is a #MatterOfChoices, and we have the choices.

#Methane Trapped In Permafrost Could Escape Its Icy Prison, Posing Climate Threat

...But in other places, even where #permafrost and underlying geological features were suitable for trapping #gas & the rocks were known sources of #hydrocarbons, there was no gas present. This, the team believe, shows the gas had already migrated elsewhere. Of 18 hydrocarbon exploration wells drilled in #Svalbard, 8 showed signs of permafrost, and half of these struck gas accumulation.

IFLScience · Methane Trapped In Permafrost Could Escape Its Icy Prison, Posing Climate ThreatBy Dr. Russell Moul

“The purpose of , as I’ve argued many times, is to shield the energy sector – both extraction and the power sector – from disruption caused by Canadian climate policy and the energy transition. The Premier and energy CEOs have bought lock, stock, and barrel into the slow transition argument. They firmly believe that misguided policy, not technology and market change, is the primary driver of the transition.” mstdn.ca/@MarkhamHislop/111489

Role of #sesquiterpenes in biogenic new particle formation: Lubna Dada et al. science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

"#researchers have identified so-called sesquiterpenes—gaseous #hydrocarbons that are released by #plants—as being a major factor in #CloudFormation. This finding could reduce uncertainties in #ClimateModels and help make more accurate predictions"

Randle Reef in #Hamilton Harbour is one of the most contaminated sediment sites in the #GreatLakes after over a century of #pollution from manufacturing. The 60 ha site has high legacy polycyclic aromatic #hydrocarbons (PAHs) from petroleum refining, coal tar gasification, steel making, and sewage. The last cleanup phase is confining toxic sediment in a 6.5 ha engineered containment facility (ECF) lined by deep-driven steel sheet pile walls, which is then capped-sealed.
