Steps Forward in Long-form Text

Some quick news about the Long-form Text project at the Social Web Foundation. After the publication of the draft FEP b2b8 ("Long-form Text"), the Social Web Foundation has been working with implementers to get more support for the Article data type, representing multi-paragraph text on the Fediverse. One of the big pain points has been how subscribers to long-form text from platforms like WordPress, WriteFreely, Plume and Ghost.org see the text in their microblogging platforms like […]

That too.

Here's a screenshot from another verifying that @reiver's robin.live -- as demo'ed yesterday at the #FediverseHouse developer meetup hosted by @socialwebfdn
-- ignores consent.

At a session I led at #FediForum last year there was talk about how unfortunate it is that we keep having blowups when developers ignore consent. As I pointed out, fediverse influencers with big platforms could help here by highlighting how many people in the fediverse value consent, and that there are some obvious steps to take to avoid a firestorm -- like, y'know, RESPECTING PEOPLE'S ALREADY-SET PREFERENCES.

But no. privacy.thenexus.today/consent

@josemurilo There's certainly a lot to critique about #FreeOurFeeds but reducing it to "we're going to build another Relay so that Bluesky's 'fire exits' are real" is just silly. The overall approach they're taking is similar to #SWF: there's a lot of money potentially floating around the ecosystem but investment is currently low,; and, there's a lot of concern about one big player dominating (Meta for ActivityPub and Bluesky in the ATmosphere).

So there's a win/win opportunity for an independent multipolar non-profit entity to complement the dominant corporation. Bluesky benefits just as much from FoF as the AI-focused companies (including Mozilla) who are the majority of the FoF 'custodians'. The need for an alternate Relay is just a convenient artifact that many people have (for whatever reason) focused on.

BTW this from the article was hysterical:

"The "Fediverse" has been around for a while and though it has never been more popular than it is now,..."

No, actually, the Fediverse had more than twice as many active users two years ago than it does today. Don't get me wrong, there's still a lot of interesting stuff happening here, but let's be realistic!

So let me get it right: #Mozilla shut down their #Mastodon instance and are now promoting that freeourfeeds.com/ #BlueSky communitywashing attempt? Oh #FreeOurFeeds is also backed by that #SWF #SocialWebFoundation who can count as partners that same #MetaPlatformsInc owned by that same #MarkZuckerberg that “has gone full #ElonMusk” allegedly triggering the FOF in the first place

What a bunch of #hypocrites

9 things the Social Web Foundation could do to prioritize safety (if they decide they want to)

privacy.thenexus.today/swf-saf

Here's the list:

  • Commit to spending at least X% on safety
  • Support diverse participation on the W3C standards group's Trust and Safety task force
  • Focus on consent-based tools and infrastructure
  • Work with people who are targets of harassment to develop tools for collaborative defense
  • Support threat modeling work
  • Develop automated tools to help moderators
  • Do any AI-related work in partnership with AI researchers who take an anti-oppressive, ethics-and-safety-first approach
  • Partner with IFTAS

Will they? Time will tell!

Linking the Social Web Foundation (#SWF) to the #SocialHub, it's the process that is more important than the outcome. It's crucial to develop grassroots consensus processes that align with open, transparent governance. This can help manage the mess and delight of the libertarian, independent spirits often seen in open-source communities. Establishing a simple, ruff consensus allows people to mediate the mess-making and guide projects more efficiently. It encourages collective decision-making while respecting diverse views within the community.

Fostering this balance is essential for building a collaborative, effective path.

SocialHub · Proposal - linking to SWFI don’t support a link to SWF at this time, but for different reasons than @stevebate. Basically I’m still in the wait-and-see camp. For one thing, I don’t think we know yet what kind of influence they are going to have. If it turns out to be positive, then at some point we may want to link to them. If it turns out the good intentions of the founders are compromised by the funders (not unusual, which is why we’re all here), then we’ll be glad we didn’t rush into a link that’s bound to be percei...

Poll: How much of the Social Web Foundation's resources should go to safety-related projects?

Safety's a critical issue on the fediverse, and SWF's budget is reportedly "closing in on $1M", so they could have a big impact here. Then again, there are lots of other important issues as well.

Your thoughts?

(See Will the Social Web Foundation prioritize safety? disucsses the general topic for more detailed discussion, but please feel free to vote in the poll where or not you read the article!)

Will the Social Web Foundation prioritize safety?

If they do, what are some good places to start?

privacy.thenexus.today/swf-saf

This is draft post, and feedback is very welcome. In fact, feedback on "what are some good places to start" is welcome even if you don't read the post ... later in this thread I'll include some of the ideas in the current version.

"While the cases have yet to find clarity, what is apparent is that users are caught between unaccountable corporations and overreaching governments. What we need is a public reckoning of how well the largest companies are doing to balance the demands of governments with the rights of their users. And whether governments are being careful enough not to sacrifice human rights and democratic ideals in their pursuit of having the upper hand."

He is a billionaire tech founder whose messaging app, Telegram, has been a safe harbor for school shooters and neo-Nazis. "One way to look at #SWF is companies who have placed a bet on #ActivityPub trying to respond to the momentum of Bluesky and in the ATmosphere, fediverses that use the newer #ATprotocol instead of ActivityPub. But as I'll discuss in an upcoming post, there are also a lot of exciting things happening in the ActivityPub Fediverse."
