As randomly chosen by survey* on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 866 on The List, submitted by leonardo.

I assumed I knew nothing of this musician and composer, as the name, face, and sound didn’t ring any bells whatsoever. But then Wikipedia told me that Tiersen did the score/soundtrack for the French film Amélie! Mon dieu, I love Amélie!

While only one or maybe two tracks on this album remind me of Amélie, it does makes me think it could be a soundtrack to an as-yet unseen film. It’s positively full of absolute gems and a whole swirl of moods, and it also features a nice handful of collaborators including Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, Stuart A. Staples of the Tindersticks, and the legendary Jane Birkin.

Given that Tiersen’s work apparently is often compared with that of Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, it’s safe to say that his work is right up my alley. I plan on checking it all out, tout de suite, starting with his most recent work up on Bandcamp. In fact, as I am writing, I randomly clicked on the cover I liked best in his BandcampPortrait (2019) – and the very first song features not only Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))), but also harpischord. I’m in love.

*The survey choices that led to this spotlight were “D”, “A”, and “Y”, following the earlier surveys with “B”, “L”, “U”, “E” and “M”, “O”, “N”. The third letter was the winning selection, so the survey result was translated as picking the third album in The List by an artist whose name starts with the letter “Y”.

Serge Gainsbourg - "Harley David Son of a Bitch" (1984)

Gainsbourg was an influential French singer-songwriter, actor, composer, and director whose varied musical style and individuality make him difficult to categorize. But this song is very French pop, aggressively pushing social boundaries as the song delves into themes of lust, desire, and the pursuit of pleasure.

It really captures the essence of Gainsbourg’s unconventional and nonconformist attitude (it’s worth reading about this guy if you’re unfamiliar, he was wild).

And of course the song was covered by UK rockers The Bollock Brothers in 1987. I like both versions.

Principal animator for the Ren and Stimpy Show, April March, released her first EP, “Chick Habit”

This is a super cute album. The title track is sung in English, but it’s really a cover of track 2, the classic French pop tune "Laisse Tomber les Filles", originally written by the legendary Serge Gainsbourg and first made famous by French pop singer France Gall.

The rest of the tracks are just as good. March does a great interpretation of Gainsbourg's "La Chanson de prévert", and Jacques Dutronc's "Le temps de l'amour". Twangy guitars, smooth basslines, and cool rhythms throughout.

Started with #frenchmusic after a proper hardcore ferry trip with waves of h**l.
#JacquesDutronc & #georgebrassens (always make me laugh)

#sergegainsbourg (whose vinyl & MANY MORE, like a WHOLE section could be found in a local supermarket!!)
#manuchao (why aren't political artists given as much space on radio anymore..)

Then arrived in #Honfleur where we took part & witnessed a lovely 1000 YEAR OLD #COMMUNITY #Tradition
Ate seafood & prepared for a week of #camping!

My new French #accordion is en route. Asking the factory for courier + tracking number if they have one. But woot! This is a totally different type of accordion, no piano keyboard, but a chromatic button accordion (C system). Gigantic challenge, but a wonderful workout for a right hand that is affected by #stroke damage and so often weaker. My way of fighting back. #squeezebox #neuro #buttonAccordion #chromatic #chromaticButtonAccordion #CBA #FrenchMusic

Just watching this #accordion performance from the French makers #Maugein my new button accordion is coming from soon. And I am utterly agog at the bloke playing backing music. He has an electronic keyboard with button accordion - left and right - adapters to play on. Never seen anything like it! youtu.be/1fhkFQptE3U #CBA #FrenchMusic #music #Squeezebox #chromatic #buttonAccordion #accordions
