Il discone della sera:
The Peawees - One Ride (2024)
L'anno scorso l'avevo un po' snobbato 'sto disco, ma ho avuto l'accortezza di comprarlo quando s'è presentata l'occasione e ora me lo godo su vinile

Mostly caught my eye with the space ship reminding me of the mothership in the Homeworld series of games. Love the music, still.
THE BRAINS
The Brains
1980 U.S. pressing
Such a killer album!
The Brains are mostly remembered for being the originators of “Money Changes Everything”, which was covered by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.
As awesome as Cyndi’s version is (and it IS AWESOME), I’ve always preferred the original Brains version. It’s such a great tune.
All that being said, The Brains’ first album (one of only two they produced), is much more than just that one great song. Tom Gray was an expert #newwave #powerpop songwriter, and evidence to that is all over this gem of a record.
Unfortunately, he passed away from cancer about 4 years ago, making him the SECOND member of the band to pass of cancer, joining drummer Charles Wolff, who died in 2010.
I have the same amount of affection for this as I do Everywhere At Once by The Plimsouls. My two favorite #80s power pop records, both of which are horrifically underrated.

Released today 38 years ago:
Nitzer Ebb "That Total Age" – 1987
Pure, aggressive EBM energy from the UK. This debut album is a relentless machine of pounding rhythms, shouted vocals, and raw industrial attitude. "Join in the chant!" and feel the power of classic body music at its finest.

I went to some antique stores yesterday and investigated some used vinyl record bins. My unscientific research on most purged artists from private record collections:
1) Molly Hatchet
2) Barry Manilo
3) Captain and Tennille
4) Jethro Tull
5) Iron Butterfly
6) Bill Cosby
These artists are the dregs of the bins. If you find more than one copy of these in a bin, just move on. I think they multiply when kept in close proximity.
Saw https://mas.to/@tangleofwires/114488428464297258 and grabbed Girls Can Tell from my collection. But that link is about the 20th anniversary of Gimme Fiction. Oh well, could always spin that one later on.
Spoon - Girls Can Tell
I think this is my favorite Spoon record, together with Telephono and the Mountains of Sound EP.
LORD JELLICOE
The Big Bamboo (A Ribald Calypso)
1965 Jamaica pressing
A very low-brow but very fun #Calypso record gets last spin of the night.
When I bought this from a bargain bin a few years ago, I must admit I did so because there was a big cartoon cock and balls on the cover wearing a hat with a bird on it.
The title is fairly accurate. These songs are absurd, bizarre, & filthy, and not so thinly veiled. In fact, the opening song, “The Big Bamboo” is just one huge dick joke, set to light and airy tropical fare.
There’s also a song about flies who shit everywhere.
A very entertaining record, and 100% APE APPROVED, due to my 12 year old sense of humor.
That being said, find somebody else to describe “My Pussin” to you.
AU PAIRS
Playing With A Different Sex
2025 Europe Ltd. Ed. Reissue

# 171 of 750
A killer sounding reissue of an essential early #80s #postpunk record. Every song is a slayer, particularly the David Bowie-penned “Repetition”.
When I heard that MOV was going to reissue it, I got very excited, because I knew it would sound really good. It was just a matter of whether or not I’d get my hands on one of the 750 copies. Mission accomplished!
Such a great band.

NIRVANA
Bleach
2011 U.S. Reissue
Around 1989/1990, a lot of Nirvana’s peers could do what they did in most respects.
There were a lot of bands who had their “Floyd The Barber” or “Sifting”.
There weren’t too many who could write songs like “About A Girl”. That’s where Kurt always separated himself from everybody else. His insane knack for melody & Beatles-esque catchiness.
Kurt was a stone-cold killer of a songwriter.
Bleach is such an incredible album for the $600 something dollars they spent on it.
It shouldn’t have been such a surprise that they ended up dominating the world for 3 years.
Anybody who heard Bleach in real time in ‘89 should have easily seen it coming.
About A Girl, School, Love Buzz, Floyd The Barber, Negative Creep…
Just one slayer after another.
