The view from a kiwi Marine Biologist, over at the United Nations Oceans Conference, and her feelings about New Zealand's government's lack of interest in the protection of the ocean.
All while the world gets on with bold action to protect the oceans. 🌊

Excellent new video from the Māui and Hector's Dolphin Defenders! 🐬

The NZ fishing industry does huge damage to ocean ecosystems but their PR would tell you otherwise. They recently released a video taking viewers 'beneath the waves', to 'muddy, sandy sea floors' where "bottom trawling is low impact".
But bottom trawling killed at least 12 Hector's dolphins in the last fishing year. So we corrected their video for them.

You'd think it would take more than a bit of paint to scare these big bad bottom trawling ships so much they decide to hide their position by switching off their AIS systems. 🎨

AIS is a safety measure and turning it off increases the risk of all vessels at sea, by making potential collisions more likely. 🚢

Did you know that NZ has a massive Exclusive Economic Zone at sea? 🌊

That means that when the Seafood industry representatives say "only 3% was trawled last year" they mean about 68,000 sq km, roughly a quarter of the landmass of the country.

Or "only about 11% has ever been trawled" they mean 465,100 sq km, or 1.7 times the entire area of the land (268,000 sq km).

Greenpeace activists rebrand NZ bottom trawler as ‘ocean killer’ at sea, baby sharks caught
(they're not baby sharks, but journos decided they were for some reason)
