And why would Trump care about lobsters?

Some of what we found in the #SeamountsExpedition and the nonsense, desperate excuses from the New Zealand Fishing Industry.
(Climate change causes coral to turn into rubble? what?)

“Coral graveyard” blamed on New Zealand’s bottom trawling fishing fleet

Shane Jones wants to make changes to the Fisheries Act. 🎣
They are great for the fishing industry, but not good for those of us who want healthy oceans. 🌊
One of the lowlights is removing access to footage from Cameras on Boats, reducing transparency and accountability of the commercial fishing fleet. 🐬

Submissions are open until April 11, and we want you to have a say! 🐙

So we made a handy tool to build a submission in no time!

Ignoring the popular demand for protection to cave to commercial fishers again.

This is yet more regulatory capture from the fishing industry preventing actual protection for a dwindling return of about $14K a year.

The health of the Hauraki Gulf is worth so much more than that.
(And there would be more fish for everyone if the area was protected properly) 🐟

In case you missed it:

Here's the Minister for Ocean Destruction arguing that cameras on fishing boats are state surveillance (huh?), Maui dolphins don't exist, he dislikes TikTok, and protecting marine life is 'woke'. (for a party called NZFirst they try hard to import American culture wars)

And somehow direct donations from the fishing industry are not a conflict of interest? 🤔

Much to consider. (also: yay Jack Tame is back!)

"'It may not be noticeable to the public right away, but it will be down the road,' he says. 'We may not notice degradation in service right away, but down the road we will start to see issues.'

"Behringer notes that some other NWS offices that were already understaffed have relied on help from Monterey meteorologists during major weather events, but with less bandwidth everywhere, that kind of boost will be less likely.”

"Of the National Weather Service, Behringer says, "Even with the rumors, I thought it wouldn’t happen to us. We usually have pretty good bipartisan support. We are deemed essential, even in a shutdown."
