Can someone here give me a clue? I'm tapped out.

I have a static web site served with vanilla Apache. No CGIs. No apps. Just boring HTML pages with just enough JS to do menu rollovers.

I keep seeing intermittent 404s in the log on pages that are certainly there. You see 200s on the same page with no intervening changes.

Now, my site *is* getting absolutely hammered by bots from China tapping what are (now) dead zip file links. Related? Not? Suck it up and pay for #^&% CloudFlare?

Success! I managed to generate a HTML report with from my logs.

What I now need to figure out is what all that information and all those abbreviations actually _mean_ - i.e. what will help me identify the causes for all the website downtimes. Can anyone recommend a good beginner's guide (i.e. for someone who has never had to deal with those technical aspects of website maintenance before)?

I need some quick help reading my logs.

In my logs, the date/time stamps have the format

wiki.sunkencastles.com XXX.XXX.XXX.XX - - [23/Oct/202524:06 +0000]

What is the correct option for my command?

goaccess.io/man

EDIT: I read the manual a bit more closely, and I realized I need to specify both:

--log-format <logformat>

and

--datetime-format <date_timeformat>

I suspect the challenge lies with the former.

EDIT: Solved, thanks to everyone who replied!

The website is finally cleared by Google's Safe Search with the only response from them being what I can only guess to be:

"oops, my bad."

Their reply was empty of anything regarding was to why it's ok now. And it originally flagged my file delivery system as the issue, and only the root of the site and a non-working redirector link (I tested). It's an out of the box solution that nothing has changed on yet it is now cleared. All I did was point out what it was to them in my resolution and here we are two days later. The redirect link was written to redirect to the root of the site. The site, regardless of the content following the URL will redirect you back to the root to login if you are not, so that was a poor test on their part.

Admittedly this took longer due to my unfamiliarity with the process. Future issues if at all should hopefully be only a few days rather than almost an entire week.

The key takeaway for site owners is to go to search.google.com (now) and follow the process to attach your ownership of a website to your google account. This requires you adding a TXT record to your DNS. on your hosting provider. They have examples on how to do this and I can help anyone who needs it. Once that is done, they can verify only you own this site and will (in theory) email you if they find future issues. You also then get a dash board where they can offer you suggestions and current issues. I can only assume the other safety systems out there have similar tools.

What is it with languages and math? Does a string-injecting system _really_ need full-blown mathematical operator set? I’m looking at multiple templating langs, and they all seem to be far from an optimal state where the emergent behavior appears:

- : No math, relies on and benevolence of /

- Liquor (by @whitequark): Includes math and lots of operators in general, too powerful to be interesting

- : require

- : No arguments to partials, thus no abstraction and data passing

- Server Side Includes: Have everything I need, but are -specific in many ways

Uuuuuuugh. I would’ve gone with either of these for my website and day-to-day programming, but I don’t want to commit to either an explicitly Turing-complete system or non-portable JS-heavy one.

I guess I’m still staying with (1) until the state of templating improves. Or until I write a version for any of these, likely SSI.

2/ Okay, I think I might already have some ideas.

My latest log has 26,694 lines.

In these 26.694 lines, I have:

- 10,724 access requests from "developers.facebook.com/docs/s"
- 4.562 access requests from "developer.amazon.com/support/a"
- 3.316 access requests from "openai.com/gptbot"

So yeah, I suspect these are the crawling bots from , , and who jointly make up for more than half the traffic - and they are hogging the more resource intensive functions, like "Recent Changes" on my wiki.

Fuck those fuckers for causing outages on my websites.

And any suggestions on how to block them (no snark, please - I _am_ new at this.)

FLOSS (Free and Libre Open Source Software) makes my days, since I can do everything from word-processing, graphics to video-editing, and other useful things in the way I want it, and I alone decide how.
When I am forced to use Closed source like iOS, or Windows, Adobe Reader or whatever this really bugs me that they disregard my preferences, mistreat my privacy, disallow and punish my creativity with restrictions.

-- Supreme Court Again Declines to Protect Sacred

By Apache Stronghold, via @bsnorrell.blogspot.com, Oct. 6, 2025

Apache Stronghold - Supreme Court update

"This morning, we received word the Supreme Court has decided not to reconsider our case. While this decision is deeply disappointing, the fight to protect Oak Flat is far from over.
We will continue pressing our case in the lower courts. In addition to our case, three other cases are also seeking to protect Oak Flat, and the Ninth Circuit will hear oral argument in those cases on
January 7, 2026. We’ll also keep urging Congress, the President, and federal agencies to stop the destruction of Oak Flat and protect our ancestral sacred land.

Oak Flat deserves the same respect and protection this country has long given to other places of worship.

Wendsler Nosie Sr. responding to the Supreme Court result, 'First, thank you everyone for all the hard work. You have been a blessing to us all in our country. Most importantly deep within us we
knew, but now we definitely witness the truth of this country, by the Supreme Court taking no action. What is evil created the unfairness, not just to us human beings but to all of God’s creations. When this country was founded, humans with the heart of worked to mute the voice of the Creator. By this undertaking, we now live with a third entity, who was created to take and destroy every blessed
gift God gave us through our . We know this evil as , which comes from
which people. We must defend what is spiritual, holy and God’s greatest gift to us all, our Mother. Today is a new day for me as I now take the blessings from Usen (God), to walk
the footsteps of the purpose I was blessed with and no longer be a captive.'

America has shown us the government’s true intentions, we are unheard and ignored once again. Our judicial system’s voice is muted by capitalism, the ultimate destruction of Mother Earth has been given permission as if they control her, she supplies our lives not the reverse. Such a sad reality.

We call on all people to pray, to raise their voices, and to join us in defending Mother Earth. Thank you for standing with us."
