Yes to California’s “No #Robo Bosses Act”

California’s Governor should sign S.B. 7, a common-sense bill to end some of the harshest consequences of automated abuse at work. @eff is proud to join dozens of labor, digital #rights, & other advocates in support of the “No Robo #Bosses Act.”

#Algorithmic decision-making is a growing threat to #workers. Bosses are using #AI to assess the body language & voice tone of job candidates.

“Six months into enforcement, #Britain’s techno-solutionist fantasy has crashed into reality with predictable results. Beneficial #online #communities have been obliterated, #VPN adoption has surged 1,400%, and the UK has created a perfect case study for why governments can’t regulate away complex social problems with #algorithmic band-aids and #surveillance theater.”

Well done #Strayan techo Gov. This is what we look forward to 🤪

The new algorithm for directed cheapest routes "slices the graph into layers, moving outward from the source like Dijkstra’s. But rather than deal with the whole frontier at each step, it uses the Bellman-Ford algorithm to pinpoint influential nodes, moves forward from these nodes to find the shortest paths to others, and later comes back to other frontier nodes. It doesn’t always find the nodes within each layer in order of increasing distance, so the sorting barrier doesn’t apply. And if you chop up the graph in the right way, it runs slightly faster than the best version of Dijkstra’s algorithm. It’s considerably more intricate, relying on many pieces that need to fit together just right. But curiously, none of the pieces use fancy mathematics."

Quanta Magazine · New Method Is the Fastest Way To Find the Best Routes | Quanta MagazineA canonical problem in computer science is to find the shortest route to every point in a network. A new approach beats the classic algorithm taught in textbooks.

“Philip himself has a ton of big #tech experience: he’s worked at #Amazon, #Google, and #Microsoft, and he’s deep in the weeds on both the tech and the business. You’ll hear us talk about Google’s business and #YouTube in particular quite a bit in this one, but we also get into #TikTok and what it means to have the incentives of #algorithmic #video platforms drastically influence both #creators worldwide and the #culture we all consume.

Of course, we talked about #AI, too, and how it’s upending every platform in different ways.”

That last sentence.
