Doctored photos are nothing new to politics.
The Nazi Propaganda magazine Illustrated Observer – or, in German, the Illustrierter Beobachter – regularly published manipulated photos in the 1920s, using camera tricks and misleading captions to exaggerate crowd sizes and spread conspiracy theories.
It was hard to know which photographs were real and which were fakes (and thus, who was telling the truth). This practice eroded confidence in the news:
