This Is My Glasgow

A plaque marking the birthplace of James Allan Mollison at 33 Fotheringay Road in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow. Mollison was an early aviation pioneer, and was the first person to fly solo east to west across the North Atlantic (which, due to the prevailing winds, is the more difficult direction) in 1932. He was married to another famous aviation pioneer, Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia.

Currently watching the old late '80s BBC documentary Reaching For The Skies, I remember watching this at the time. Great show. A good thing about when it was made was that they had significant people still alive to interview such as a WWI pilot, Frank Whittle and Chuck Yeager.

#OnThisDay, 16 Apr 1912, Harriet Quimby becomes the first woman to fly a plane across the English Channel.

Quimby was the first American woman to receive a pilot’s licence and made her living doing exhibition flights in the US. She also made money as the advertising face of a grape juice. She died in July 1912 when her plane pitched forward at 1,000 feet and she was thrown out.

Attached is the main part of a summer 1856 medical journal advertisement for Dr. Taylor's Water Cure Establishment. The second item is my commentary on the ad plus information about the early development of physical therapy in the United States. If you are interested in the histories of physical therapy and massage therapy, my posts (TribeOfJesse) at FamilySearch.org under the names of George Herbert Taylor and George Henry Patchen in the Sources sections may be worth your while to look through. For some reason, the Person record for Dr. George H. Taylor are hard to find at FamilySearch. The easiest thing is to search on the name of his son, William George Langworthy Taylor of Lincoln, Nebraska, and then link to the father. FamilySearch can be a bit hard to use until one gets used to it. Search on a person's name and in the Results list many entries have something like a decorated < symbol. Clicking on it ought to lead to a Person record. My most numerous and extensive posts are under the Sources heading. Click on a Sources entry and it ought to expand considerably. The present entry is under the year 1856 and has the title, "Swedish Movement Cure Department at Dr. Taylor's Water Cure, Summer 1856." None of these words should throw you. It is not an article about hydropathy but rather a post about early physical therapy. Incidentally, Dr. George Henry Patchen went on to become the medical theoretician of chiropractic. W.G. Langworthy Taylor wrote a 1937 textbook about spiritualism titled "Immortality." Dr. Charles F. Taylor's grandson, also named Charles Fayette Taylor, was one of the most important pioneers of aviation. A lot of brilliant people were in this Taylor line.

I am delighted to announce that I have recently signed a two-book deal with my publisher @penswordbooks (I have sat on this info for a while due to the exhibition opening etc)

The first, which I am very excited about, is an extension of Chapter 8 from my previous but one book Burying the Dead.
Before you think, 'oh my god, how boring, a book about planes'...... this is ME you are referring to. Have I ever done anything expected or followed the norm? Would I ever give you 'just a book about planes?' Of course not! So, expect Alaskan glaciers spitting out plane parts, graves embedded into an active runway, an entire fleet of fighter jets buried underneath the Iraqi desert, and a simple small Teddy Bear, squadron leader of the best military aviation channel in action. And lots, lots more........

Watching Alexander the OK on youtube today about an unfortunate, jet powered crop duster that the Soviet Union guided the design of in Poland.

This test aircraft was built out of an existing, successful aircraft, which had its ass chopped off to accommodate a jet engine. It was a precursor to the unfortunate final product, but is also one of Alexander's favorite planes. As I was watching, I immediately thought to myself... Man, this reminds me of Ailantd Sikowski's work! I gotta show them.

Engineering drawings of an ungainly biplane viewed from directly above, to the right, and to the left side, with an actual photo of the aircraft for reference. It has a radial engine up front, pretty standard looking design until you reach the back of the wing. At that point instead of a solid fuselage, the tail is made of a rectangular truss system holding a twin rudder, high elevator tail in the shape of a widened, inverted letter U. In the side pictures you can see a secondary jet engine protruding from the rear behind the cockpit.
A photo of a handmade model of the same aircraft hanging in front of a green screen. Here you can see the tail truss system is constructed similarly to scaffolding used to work on the sides of tall buildings, but taperes and elevates slightly as it extends to the rear. This view also highlights the unusual landing gear configuration: It is a tail dragger (reverse tricycle), or it would be if the tailwheel was actually attached to the tail. Instead, the tailwheel is attached to the rear of the fuselage, as the gantry style tail structure angles up too much for a tailwheel to not cause the rear of the fuselage to touch the ground.

This also highlights the very standard, proven biplane design with struts linking the top and bottom wings about 2/3rds of the way out of each wing. Also notable is the large scoop on the right-hand side of the aircraft (camera's left) that feeds air to the secondary jet engine on the rear of the aircraft. That scoop is approximately half the height of the fuselage, and extends about 3 feet out of the side of the aircraft. This is a test bed aircraft, designed to test the efficacy of the jet engine while not relying upon it alone for propulsion. The prototypical nature of this aircraft is glaringly obvious.
Photo of the actual aircraft, taken from low to the ground, ahead, and to the right. That bigass jet intake is very prominently featured here, painted with red and white stripes around the inlet. It is nearly the size of the whole cockpit. Also easier to see here is just how long the nose of the aircraft is past the cockpit to accomodate the large radial engine. The stubby, short wheelbase reverse tricycle landing gear configuration is also easier to see here, looking only half as ungainly as it does directly from the side. The aircraft's wings are a gray/silver color, as is the engine cowling, while the rest of the fuselage and jet intake that remained unpainted is a very pleasing copper color. It looks like the kind of copper cup you drink a Moscow Mule out of was the design inspiration for this plane.
