#AlternateFridayMusic April 11 2025 the word is "Horrible"

Composer: Andrew Lloyd Webber
Album: Cats Soundtrack (Original London Cast) (1981)
Song: Mungojerrie & Rumpelteazer

youtube.com/watch?v=T5I6lTmahc

Then the family would say, "It's that horrible cat
But was it Mungojerrie or Rumpelteazer"
And most of the time
They'd leave it at that

My parents were big into theatre when I was a kid, and as a result we had a lot of musicals in our music collection. "Cats" was one of my favourites as a kid, and this was one of my favourite songs.

I was dismayed when I saw it live and they'd ruined this song! Given it a new stupid melody. Yuk. Give me the original any time.

The prompt is Horrible
R.E.M. “Man on the Moon” from Automatic For The People, 1992

Lyrics:
Moses went walking with the staff of wood
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Newton got beaned by the apple good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Mister Charles Darwin had the gall to ask
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

On Automatic for the People, #REM continued with acoustic artistry rivaling that achieved on their masterpiece “Losing My Religion" paired with offbeat subject matter - here, the late actor/performance artist #AndyKaufman, embracing the question raised by Kaufman's performance, and his very life: What is real?

Throughout the song #MichaelStipe sketches vignettes from Kaufman’s professional life, but in the lyrics quoted above, Stipe invokes biblical and historical scientific figures; is he elevating Kaufman to their stature, or just demonstrating his signature non sequitur technique?

🎶 Hi I think I've found a buyer for your fire
I think you think you thought you'd be higher me
I will be with you when you worked out
What you wanted was to walk
All you do is crawl

You're unravelling heckling yourself
Head half full of hell, half chemical, half hysterical
Leaning out the window when your ego go away
Dying by your hand cause everybody says you can 🎶

The prompt is Gather

Joni Mitchell covered the song Pastures of Plenty, written by Woody Guthrie, a song about migrant farm workers.

It's a mighty hard row that my poor hands have hoed
My poor feet have traveled a hot dusty road
Out of your Dust Bowl and westward we rolled
Your deserts were hot and your mountain was cold

I worked in your orchards of peaches and prunes
I slept on the ground in the light of your moon
On the edge of the city you'll see us and then
We come with the dust and we’re gone with the wind

California Arizona, I made all your crops
Now it’s up north up to Oregon to GATHER your hops
Dig the beets from your ground, cut the grapes from your vine
To set on your table that light sparkling wine

Green pastures of plenty from dry desert ground
From the Grand Coulee Dam where the waters roll down
Every state in this Union us migrants have been
We'll stay in this fight and we'll fight until we win

The prompt is Gather

Fine Arts Militia - We Are Gathered Together (2003)

Fine Arts Militia is a band formed by #ChuckD, best known for seminal #HipHop group #PublicEnemy. They’ve only released this one album, a potent mix of Chuck D's forthright vocals, more #SpokenWord than #rap, over a rock-solid #RhythmSection and searing #guitar as aggressive as any Public Enemy missive.

Not a weak track to be found here, but this one, “A Twisted Sense Of God Pt. 2,” sure hits.

(And to think how mad we were THEN...)

Artist: The Cure
Album: Disintegration (1989)
Song: Lullaby

Searching out fear in the gathering gloom
and suddenly! a movement in the corner of the room!
and there's nothing i can do when i realise with fright
that the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight

I don't like to brag, but _I_ first heard of The Cure as far as back as 1985 with "In Between Days". Definitely got in on the ground floor before they got big, yup.

They're one of those bands that I don't always like consistently, but they've got some good bits, and this sweet harmless lullaby is one of them.

This week we "Gather" for #AlternateFridayMusic

This 80s-90s Aussie band is fronted by the incomparable Lisa Gerrard. Even if you've never heard of her, you've probably heard her voice in a million places. Her full bodied contralto voice has an astounding range, able to hit controlled notes octaves above the expected. Semi operatic with a splash of eastern Europe and a healthy dose of melancholy. Brendan Perry's instrumentation for this band fuses themes and instruments from the middle ages to the baroque, which compliments her sound perfectly.
