The Cure, “A Short Term Effect” from Pornography, 1982

#TheCure had evolved steadily since their debut,Three Imaginary Boys, by the time they produced this atmospheric proto-#goth release.

I can't help but hear these lyrics as almost comically stereotypically goth-dreary now - the perspective of maturity, or world-weary cynicism? -
but they do reflect lead and driving force #RobertSmith's self awareness about the substances he and his bandmates were reputed to be indulging in at the time, and when I let go and sink into the music, yeah, it still works.

Maybe using album title is a bit of a cheat, especially when "Substance" is literally just a collection of 12-inch singles. But New Order was one of those British bands that mostly didn't put their singles on albums, so it's an essential part of their discography.

And also I love this video, it's my favourite video of all time. It's ridiculous and has nothing to do with the song, but those clowns/dancers just mesmerize me every time.

My thought for this theme was substance abuse. Working in healthcare provides a lot of insight into the causes and outcomes of self-medication. So here's a song about struggling with addiction. Originally a song by Buffy Sainte Marie, I, personally, like this version better. (and, no, I don't know why they pronounce it like this😖):
