Imagine if flight attendants handed out free N95 masks before take off instead of just hot towels. Every public place is a key opportunity to educate people and normalize masks.

Dr. Lucky Tran :verified:

And yes, a big reason why more public health awareness doesn't happen at transit facilities is because airline CEOs want to pretend viruses don't exist, and they successfully lobbied the CDC to reduce public health guidance.

For those who think that airlines handing out free N95 masks is impossible, many international airlines gave passengers “hygiene packs” (which included masks, hand sanitizer, and gloves) at the start of the pandemic. They should have continued.

@luckytran "successfully lobbied" in their case means that one CEO had one op-ed published, and the CDC within a week changed national public policy that affects all of us.
When actual people try to lobby for change, it takes years of Herculean effort to even get the change considered, and decades for it to be implemented, and at any time it can be walked back by a new administration

@luckytran I think a much better approach is, stop traveling for four years. Every airplane ticket is a whole lot of inflation protection against the tariff and deportation inflation to come...

@stalbaum @luckytran That's not an option for people who are physically separated from the people they want to be with. Yes if you're just having fucking vacations stop flying. But that's not the topic at hand.

@luckytran I wonder: is there a model for making things like this available from outside funding sources so the airlines wouldn’t need to foot the bill. Something like the bibles in every hotel room, but instead it’s masks in every seat pocket. And also available in the airports at check-in and security.

@luckytran yes they did! Now we mostly get dirty looks when we fly masked up.

@luckytran here the airline monopoly went on to say that science said masks were useless…
