Has there ever been a better lyricist than the late Shane MacGowan? On St. Patrick's Day, LitHub's Ed Simon pays tribute to Ireland's punk poet.
Happy Birthday to Caitlin "Cait" O'Riordan, bass guitar player for the Irish punk/folk band the Pogues and later bass player with Elvis Costello, born on this day in 1965, Lagos, Nigeria

The Pogues singing 'Dirty Old Town' drunk in a pub
Aw, this is a very cute video! Thanks to @Homestead for sharing!

I love Fairytale of New York, but always felt a bit uncomfortable with the homophobic slur. Very grateful to Grace Petrie for providing a version with an alternative line: https://youtu.be/cBwqjwB6Skk?si=rcPO0LyxSgxiglQI
(also the pandemic-era video is very nostalgic in all the right ways)

“I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So, Happy Christmas
I love you, baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true”

The Pogues - Red Roses For Me (1984)
(Finally upgraded from the original cassette to the "40th anniversary edition")
40 years ago today
'Red Roses for Me' is the debut studio album by the London-based folk /celtic punk band The Pogues, released on this day in 1984
This is an interesting BBC R4 documentary about Dirty Old Town by Ewan MacColl, the various interpretations and the recordings of the song by the likes of the Dubliners and the Pogues.
Ewan MacColl apparently said: "I don't know what the Irish are going to do with it because they are famous for making any song their song.' I can't imagine what he meant.
