The detail of the horse heads, the singularity of the pommel, the filigrees, the Nordic-inspired blade.... It's one of those designs that always haunts my mind, and, despite it being a challenge, I felt it was a natural next step in my leather carving and moulding skills. It's been six months of slow progress in my free time, but I couldn't be happier with the result

Collage of 6 pics of different stages of the hilts' shaping. The first shows the top layer of the guards tooled on the leather with the shape of the ring beside traced. The second shows both hilts assembled, 4 layers of leather glued together, the handles carved and sanded roughly, the pommels only traced with a pen on the block of layers, and the tooled layers of the guards missing. On the third, the tooled layer is glued to the rest, the pommel is roughly carved in the trapezoidal shape and there is a piece of leather with the final layer of the pommel tooled and still uncut; one of the hilts is facing down showing the back part where the strap will be attached and the stud is placed in the pommel. The three pics behind show the final aspect of the hilts unpainted: a general view of both hilts, one grabbed and one on the cutting mat, a very close up pic of one of the horses neck, the textures of the filigrees and the mane at the external border; and a pic of the corners of the pommels, an almost hidden part from most of viewpoints, with more filigrees carved with a pyrograph

The second pair of pics shows a black layer on the nooks and crannies and most of the surface, but the most prominent volumes still white. The next pair shows the first layer of metallic painting, dark bronze and thin silver. And the last pair shows the final layer, a lightly darker and a brighter golden for the hilts, the handle already dyed, and a glowing silver for the blades

A close pic of the tips of the blade/straps, the longest slightly darked than the shorter. And both belts placed around the waist of a mannequin but showing the back part with the brights and shadows highlighting the volumes of the edges and fullers

As emblematic as Narsil or Sting, and just as tied to its bearer, is Herugrim, the sword of the king of Rohan Théoden. And, for me, one of the most beautiful works of forge and blacksmithing ever designed
