My point of view from our table at The Pop Up. While this place is known to most as a place to drink, I know it as the place where I went to with two of my favorite people to get ice cream wrapped in roti bread. Some of my fondest memories before the COVID-19 pandemic hit were going out with those two in our pajamas in the middle of the night to get sweets.

I am no longer as close to those two as I used to be.

Happy 125th Independence from Spain my beloved Nation, the Philippines!

(Which ironically, we're still using the name they gave us.)

For today's independence post, let's talk a bit about General Pío del Pilar.

The attached image is the KKK (Katipunan) flag used by General Pío del Pilar, the namesake of barangay Pio del Pilar, #Makati City.

His flag was called “Bandila ng Matagumpay” (en: “Flag of the Triumphants”) and was first used on July 11, 1895. (And his KKK faction was called “Matagumpay” (en: “Triumphants”)

Pío del Pilar was a force to reckoned with. He liberated , defended, and participated in many battles against the Spaniards. Some of these places we know today as Mandaluyong City, Las Piñas City, the Municipality of Pateros, Taguig, the province of Nueva Ecija, parts of Cavite province, and Calamba City (in the province of Laguna), to mention a few. (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%ADo )

Fun facts:
* General Pío del Pilar was born in Barrio Culi-culi, San Pedro de Macati.

* Barrio Culi-culi is today's barangays Pio del Pilar and Bangkal.

* While San Pedro de Macati is now Makati City.

* His father was a farmer from Pasay City (one of the oldest cities in the country, and itself was a “kingdom” in pre-colonial times, named after Dayang-dayang (princess) Pasay, daughter of Rajah Sulayman of the “kingdom” of Maynila).

* And his mother was an embroider from Mandaluyong City.

Hailing from a well-to-do family of farmers, and crowned "Reyna Elena" in her town's Santacruzan, Melchora married Fulgencio Ramos, a cabeza de barangay. The couple had 6 children. Her husband's death devastated her, but she single-handedly managed her husband's business. It was in her backyard where the Cry of #PH Revolution happened. Her son Juan Ramos was a member of the #Katipunan. She generously gave 100 bags of rice, 10 carabaos, & other supplies to the movement, believing in the cause.

Even while Valenzuela changed his tune when put under interrogation of Spanish agents, he may have only done so to protect Rizal & the Katipunan. Some of Rizal's siblings became members of the #Katipunan—Paciano became a Katipunan general, while Josefa & Trinidad became members of the Katipunan's women chapter. The sisters were witness to the wedding of Andres Bonifacio & Gregoria de Jesus. With or w/out "American sponsorship" as Constantino claimed, Leon Ma. Guerrero pointed out:

Alejandrino joined the #Katipunan. Upon the outbreak of the #PH Revolution in 1896, he initiated the procurement of arms from Japan via Hong Kong. When revo leaders were voluntarily exiled to HK via Pact of Biak-na-Bato, Alejandrino welcomed them there. Upon the resumption of PH Revo vs. Spain, Alejandrino was w/ U.S. Adm. George Dewey in the Battle of Manila Bay. Soon after, he became a delegate in the Malolos Congress, provisionally representing Catanduanes through Aguinaldo's appointment.

Today is #BonifacioDay, a holiday.

Supremo Andres Bonifacio, The Father of Philippine Revolution, founder of the #Katipunan (KKK means different for Filipinos, it is Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan) and also, the first president of the Philippines (some historians don’t agree). Over-all bad-ass guy.

Fellow filipinos betrayed him. And I think, that set the course of how philippine politics continue until now.
