Asheville is over 2,000 feet above sea level, and ~300 miles away from the nearest coastline. No place is safe from climate change.
We all suffer the consequences. We must all take action. We are all in this together.
@tk @luckytran Yeah, Wendy's like all the other climate denying corporations should be immune from climate caused disasters! Especially since we can all see the solar panels on top of their buildings and the water level is over the top of their windows (10+ feet). Sheesh...
@luckytran a town we used to visit… wonder how the downtown is affected
@luckytran I am fairly certain many people in those communities are not thinking ‘we shouldn’t build right next to the river and should become green energy advocates’. Maybe some are. Houses built on sandbars along the coast in NC and FL wash into the ocean or are flattened and people still flock to those areas.
@luckytran This is the start of the climate catastrophe we have been warning since for ever!
Sadly, with the massive increase of CO2 emission by military and change of focus of almost all countries from combating global warming to each other, we are just simply doomed to watch our earth go through it's first man made extinction.
@luckytran
This should be a wake up call! It can happen anywhere!
@luckytran got a crumb of internet finally. I'm tired of living through historic events. This disaster could have been prevented. No one was prepared, not especially government officials who exist only to do that Even now, the city and county briefings are nothingburgers with a lot of "i dunno" in response to basic things.
I have a long list of things I'll hoard for the next time this happens.
@luckytran . Stay strong.
And it takes far LESS water to do this in these places than it would at the coast.
@luckytran Maybe Helene will wash the red stain away, but it doubtful.
Decades of objective evidence shows that Reagonomics has been an abject failure for average Americans, ESPECIALLY voters in deep red regions. Nobody is safe from Climate change but these deep red areas in the US are currently among the hardest hit right now.
Without doubt, this is the exact outcome those who gutted our education system hoped for.
@luckytran “Those who have the most, have the most to lose.”
Are we taking bets on if the US will change?
@luckytran This is why, in the Jetsons, all their homes are on stilts way up in the air, isn't it?
@luckytran
Even the giant SUVs are under water.
@luckytran I’m a scant 2.5 hours from there with a step-mother unaccounted for. Scary stuff.
But you are correct—this effects everyone.
@caffeineplease @luckytran I hope your step mother is ok
@enby_of_the_apocalypse @luckytran Thanks—fortunately only had to deal with no shower for a few days
@luckytran If this is from a water source it should of been checked at narrowest point to see what will effect the places and further up to hopefully avoid this kind of situation...
@Lstn2urmama @luckytran In the US it is common for buildings to be designed and insured based on the "100 year flood", which is a 1% chance of flooding each year, or should happen once a century on average. This is deeper flooding (by several feet) in Asheville than has ever been seen in almost 3 centuries that they've been keeping track of the water level. I'm not sure exactly what the statistical probabilities are, but I'd imagine this is probably closer to the "1000 year flood" level.
@ZahmbieND @luckytran Not all buildings are that rule either ...
@luckytran “Sir, this is a Wendy’s,” is about all the response I can muster, but my understanding is that they usually have windows when standing alone and I couldn’t see any windows.
The first time I heard about the Nolichucky River in Tennessee was due to its dam nearly failing.
We are in an emergency which calls for drastic action. Forget the what about the economyism! I can’t believe the insistence on making more oil available for burning.
@luckytran Q: Why is this 3:2?
The area around #Asheville features some of the highest elevations (#MtMitchell) in the East and very low valleys too. The #FrenchBroadRiver flows through those valleys & produces major flooding when in spate. Add a non-moving #TropicalStorm into the mix and it really becomes problematic. #FunFact: Asheville is home to the #NOAA National Climatic DataCenter. It houses climate records going back to the Pioneers. That facility (old one) would have not survived this. @luckytran
@luckytran Yikes. That explains why LGR said it'll be a while before he's back doing content.
