So sad. A California teacher died of rabies after she was bitten by a bat in her classroom. “She was trying to scoop it up...She didn’t want to harm it.”
Only 1-3 human rabies cases are reported in the U.S. each year. Rabies is mostly found in bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes. Bites from these high-risk animals should be treated prophylactically at the time of the bite. By the time symptoms develop weeks later, it’s too late.
Btw, prophylaxis for bites involving
small, wild rodents, such as squirrels, chipmunks, rats, hamsters, gerbils,
guinea pigs, mice, and rabbits, is generally not indicated. There has never been a case of transmission to humans from these animals.
