Masks are under serious threat at being banned widely due to politicization. This would be a public health disaster. If you are only wearing a mask at protests, please consider also wearing them elsewhere. The more people mask, the more we normalize masks and protect them against bans.
@luckytran If masks are banned, I will continue wearing a mask because I have to. I will sue, and I don't believe that I will be alone.
It would really help if more people were continuing to mask. Not just to prevent bans, but to help protect people like me.
@abbynormative @luckytran I'll be masking too. Come at me. I'm a disabled woman with an ax to grind.
I'll also be bugging my local, state, and federal reps.
@danni_storm
I like the sentence this way: "I'm a disabled woman with an axe."
@abbynormative @luckytran
The people trying to actually ban masks will sadly be deviously smart. It won't be a “ban” per se but there will be more and more social stigma against people who wear them. It will become socially acceptable to treat masked people like they have communicable diseases by default – that sort of thing.
All the more reason to wear masks (I do 90% of time in enclosed spaces even though I don't need to medically), but I want to point out there will probably be no option to adjudicate the issue.
It will become? Some would argue, we're already there.
@juliewebgirl @bkuhn Yeah, I have to say, beyond my health issues, the reason I've had no problem with continuing to mask is that I really don't care what other people think about me.
@juliewebgirl I think it depends on geography. People here in PNW in cities are still friendly to masked people.
@luckytran Also, wear them at protests! You're in the middle of a large crowd, singing and shouting. Lots of areas with big protests yesterday were heavily impacted by wildfire smoke with AQIs in at least the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" aka damaging to everyone but may land you in the hospital if you have underlying respiratory or cardiovascular conditions range and <5% of participants had any mask at all.
@PedestrianError @luckytran In Indiana, there is a law against wearing masks at protests. Glad to see that didn't stop people yesterday.
Put on an ICE patch and you can mask anytime you want.
@luckytran this is very important, it would help vulnerable people
@luckytran
Face paint could be used to paint masks on faces. It would look like people are wearing masks, even though they aren’t. Of course, it might confuse things when it comes to possible charges. Lots of people wear makeup. Just sayin’.
@AskPippa @luckytran
Maybe it's time to get a few of these medical masks with face photos on them?

@luckytran
At an ICE protest, a member of the disabled community spoke to us and begged us all to mask. The event provided free masks to any who showed up without one. We do indeed need to make protests accessible. Many people with disabilities would gladly protest if they felt safe doing so, and in any case they should be able to live their lives in public.
I am glad to be seeing more and more masks at protests where I am. I think that message is getting through.
If masks are illegal, only criminals will wear masks.
@luckytran
"Masks are under serious threat at being banned widely due to politicization...."
Maybe by advertising expensive masks with brand names we could make them more acceptable.
Or promote them as 'politeness gesture': when you have a cough, wear a mask.
Royal intervention also helps: Friedrich der Grosze (1740-1786) introduced potatoes in Preussen to prevent a famine and still today Germans love eating them. So get a king to wear a mask at an official occasion!
@luckytran Yeah, I've been noticing more antiprotest laws targeting mask wearing. And hey. The no vaccine policy means I won't stop wearing one anytime soon!
@luckytran Remember during the first year of the pandemic, when they made cool masks with cartoon characters for kids? We need more cool looking masks. Masks with jokes on them, masks with characters on them and masks in fashionable colors. Rainbow masks for Pride, anyone?
Making masking fun would make more people mask up.
@samhainnight
Right. How many people do you think would have worn a mask if it had a crown and an "X" through it?
@luckytran
@juliewebgirl @samhainnight @luckytran I’m tempted to get some “Fuck Trump” stickers for my mask for next time i have to brave the outside world. In Canada you’re more likely to get a positive response to this than in the US. Or “my other mask is a Ferrari”
@samhainnight @luckytran I've gotten through most of the pandemic using Be Healthy masks that have pretty patterns... I swear I get fewer weird looks in public because they don't look so clinical, so people don't seem to have the same visceral reaction to them as a plain mask. (Plus it seemed like my spouse was more likely to wear one when it became a fashion choice )
What's really odd is that ICE officers always wear masks, but protestors are not allowed to.
@luckytran It is *not hard* to stick one on to go to the grocery store. I am sloppy. I strive to do better esp. because ... I am pretty sure I'm a NOVID and I would love to stay that way. SO I have one at work and catch myself and tug it back up when I've just wanted to say a thing to a student.
(THey're not likely to be banned here. )
Let's ban the hated ICE agents from wearing masks.
I wear my mask like my motorcycle helmet. Both have saved my quality of life.
@luckytran And stop wearing masks in protests unless you are doing it to prevent COVID-19 infection. Most people are doing it to hide.
@Scienceisnotopinions @luckytran I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to avoid surveillance. I mask at protests to protect myself from covid, to protect others and to protect my identity. This is the age we live in now.
@Gdac @luckytran The problem is that they are making masks illegal now because people are using them for crimes. Partly, it's an excuse for the government, though.
We need all the protection we can get from COVID-19. They are taking away vaccines now, and then it will be masks.
@Scienceisnotopinions @luckytran I get what you’re saying, but masks at protests are not mostly for criming.
@luckytran A ban on masks is a ban against people like me existing in public. I got covid before the lockdowns in the U.S., because our government failed to act. It left me significantly disabled. And now, I must avoid getting it again. A mask ban is a return of the ugly laws, a ban on disabled people. I will not obey. Let’s go to court. Absolutely not. I have a right to exist.
A mask ban takes away the rights of everyone who wants to protect their own health and the health of the people around them.
Other people might only think that Covid will not harm them, but the medical literature says otherwise.
@luckytran one of the crazy ones
@luckytran I went into a dispensary today, and everyone was masked. It was glorious.
@luckytran I wear masks partly for the health benefit, of course, but mostly because it makes every day a mini-halloween. It acts as an anti-masker identification device because it provokes them to comment.
@luckytran Yup. Still masking here in stores & other enclosed spaces, post Covid because... well, we're not really "post" Covid, we just have a gov't that's nuts, and I no longer trust anyone out there.
@luckytran Everyone just say they are ICE and masks are A-OK,
@luckytran
I wear my mask every time I leave home.
