Aside from the fact that anyone can get seriously ill from COVID, a key point they are deliberately hiding when removing access is that COVID vaccines reduce transmission. People choose to get vaccinated to protect other people. It is wrong and harmful to take that choice away.
...plus long term health risks, chronic illness is something most people live in denial of until they get it themselves.
@luckytran @JosephLeedy I’m unclear on the policy. Are they actively denying people the choice of getting the vaccine?
@luckytran RIGHT. That should be ENOUGH. More than enough!!!
@luckytran They don’t care!
@luckytran I get monthly infusions of immunosuppressants, but I'm under 65 and I'm terrified that they won't let me get my COVID booster or even my flu shot this fall.
@luckytran as a non medical person, please can you explain to me how the vaccines protect against transmission? All I hear is that people think that if they're vaccinated they won't catch COVID. Many (most/everyone I know) then wander around with impunity, employing no other protective measures. The attitude seems to be that they've done all they need to do
@elliek @luckytran Vaccines increase your immune system’s ability to fight off the virus before it has a chance to settle in and cause more serious illness. This not only reduces your chance of long-lasting or permanent damage to your organ systems, but also results in much less virus being shed to others around you.
If a large enough proportion of the population is vaccinated, the likelihood of self-sustaining community spread is decreased or eliminated (this is the so-called “herd immunity”) because any virus that is shed is less likely to encounter a susceptible host in quantities sufficient to cause infection. The proportion required depends on how easily the virus is spread.
@bhawthorne @luckytran
Thank you.
Having never had it we would be obvious targets for any around, especially as we can't be vaccinated due to side effects after the third.
@luckytran Feels like every day I get another reason to say, "Wow, I'm glad I live in Canada."
Seems you're lucky not only in comparison to the US more recently but in this respect in comparison to Germany since 2023 when they officially limited recommendations to 60+ or certain preexisting conditions. It's still possible to access the vax outside the rec but usually for $ and after getting recommendations via the internet for the few doctors or pharmacies who do vax outside these recs.
@project1enigma Need to find someone for the vax again.
Yeah. I got one of the last Novavax in April but had to travel more than for the last few times.
