Wow. Biden's former COVID czar—who downplayed the ongoing long-term impacts of COVID—just endorsed several of Trump's picks to lead health agencies. All of Trump's nominees have spread misinformation about vaccines, opposed lifesaving COVID measures, and promoted false health claims.

Dr. Lucky Tran :verified:

Worryingly, several public health academics and scientists are rushing to sane-wash Trump's nominees. They naively think that trying to place nice with them now will limit the damage. The history of authoritarian governments proves otherwise. Do not obey in advance. It only makes things worse.

@luckytran yeah that's worrying. We have too many immediate and short term worries and making nice won't help.

@luckytran
I think 'sane-washing' should be the Word of the Year 2025.
Edit: as pointed out, 'normalising' is a better term.

@MostlyTato @luckytran It's a vile term that should be thrown in the trash. "Normalizing" does the same job without shitting on people with mental illness.

@luckytran he needs to fluff them up as respectable leaders in public health so the underlings fall in line. They won't fall in line if the appointees can't inspire an adequate level of respect. Jha is currently enjoying a spot at the top, it's been working like a dream for the capital class, so it's important he confers the blessing to other sycophants on his way out the door.

@luckytran
Unless the people going in have a backpack of monkey wrenches and superhero durability, they should probably stay away from the hellfire.

@luckytran hey Dr. Tran, thanks for consistently posting good commentary, warnings, and calls to action. I'm sure others have said it, but use the term "normalizing" rather than the ableist term "sane-wash". Thanks!
