At the start of COVID, the government implemented many social programs that helped people who were struggling. These programs were immensely popular.
Yet instead of fighting hard to extend and expand them, Democrats prematurely declared the pandemic was over and let them expire.
Continually stating that things were "back to normal" as many were continuing to struggle with their health, to pay their bills, to afford the essentials etc., was a complete messaging failure.
@luckytran Several of these were explicitly blocked by Manchin and Sinema in collaboration with Republicans.
Yeah, I remain pissed that Biden didn't somehow find a way to get them through. Among the many things I'm pissed off about right now.
@MichaelTBacon @luckytran
It's not just that the Democrats fail to push progressive policies through. It's that they never even try fighting for them and never demonstrate any interest in them in their public statements.
"the Democrats" include people who fought like hell for progressive policies and people who sabotaged them. Saying "the Democrats" do anything but try to win elections together is just being basic.
@MichaelTBacon @luckytran
The reason I phrase it this way is because progressives make up a tiny minority of the Democratic members of Congress and the Senate, and the party’s leadership frequently reveals itself to be more closely aligned with Republicans on many policies than with the fledgling progressive wing of their own party.
As they demonstrated not so long ago, the Democratic Party establishment would rather lose to someone like Trump than to someone like Bernie.
@luckytran And this led to the worst possible political outcome: People had long stopped getting this help by November, while #Republicans blamed #inflation on "#Democrat spending."
@luckytran Although, to be fair, “continuing to struggle with their health, to pay their bills, to afford the essentials etc” is EXACTLY how this country was before COVID, so pretty “normal” as far as dysfunction goes.
@luckytran
I saw a thread on Twitter from Jason Furma, Obama's economic advisor, pointing out--correctly, this week--the many economic indicators that sank the Dems' campaign this year. The problem is that Furman was one of the a-holes predicting a V-shaped recovery in 2021 and advocating for all special measures to be cut off to avoid heating up the economy. He was so wrong and damaging to the cause.

@luckytran
The Biden economy at the moment is great, by Republican standards. All the macro figures look fine and he even invested in manufacturing which may pay out in Trump's term. But the macro numbers don't address the hurt in people's pockets. All of these measures did that. All of these packages are like stars in the sky, forming two constellations named UBI and Universal Healthcare.

@luckytran Um - on most of these thing the Democrats *did* try to continue, but they were blocked by Manchin, an independent. The Dems never really had a majority in the Senate under Biden; they had to rely on *four* independents: Manchin, Sinema, King, and Sanders.
@luckytran THAT was a strategic mistake.
@luckytran This is the root cause of Trump’s win.
@luckytran
FFS, extending most of the programs, particularly child tax credit, was absolutely part of the program - shot down by the GOP and troublesome Manchin.
This is nonsense.
Covid was incredibly profitable for billionaires.

Prolonging a pandemic for fun & profit helped fund Trump back into office.
Aren't windfall profits & price gouging profiteering grand (not)?
Covid will be used as a pre-existing condition when the GOP ends the ACA.
Boomers at the end of their lives were never going to vote for an administration favoring wealth taxes, inheritance taxes, or tax reform.

@luckytran This is correct that's the problem it's clear the Democrats should've kept the polices in place cause that's what voters remember.
The Biden Administration was bad people. Fuck everyone that normalized them.
@luckytran Because at the end of the day Dems still refuse to believe in Keynesian economics.
