Please stop saying we should wear masks "when appropriate."
COVID surges throughout the year, and other viruses, pollution, wildfire smoke etc. are also significant health issues.
It is ALWAYS appropriate to wear a mask.
When officials say wear a mask “when appropriate” or “if you personally feel you are at risk,” it has the opposite effect and stigmatizes mask wearing.
The best way to encourage mask wearing is to say that it’s a good idea for ANYONE wear a mask at ANY TIME.
@luckytran That's also sort of the point of this mixed messaging, isn't it? "Assess your risk" and "wear masks when appropriate" do signal the continued danger, just in a way that actively (and knowingly) encourages inaction. If ever the consequences of this attitude come to light, they can simply point and proclaim that they warned an apathetic public.
Long COVID is real. The virus spreads throughout the body. Sometimes it causes significant, long term health problems. The more times you contract COVID-19, the more likely you are to develop Long COVID.
N or KN-95 masking can be very effective at keeping the virus from becoming airborne. And at keeping airborne virus away from well peoples’ airways.
But almost no-one masks anymore. Even at crowded gatherings with no to poor “clean” air exchange. People who wouldn’t have unprotected sex with everyone within cough radius will heedlessly breathe whatever others blow out.
So encouraging everyone to encourage anyone to wear an effective mask anytime would indeed help reduce transmission of this and other diseases.
Grandson was exposed to a student with COVID-19 on 3rd day of school. We’re now masking & running air purifiers. And waiting a few days to see if we develop symptoms, tho almost half of cases are asymptomatic.
Then we test.
Masking at school full time? Yes pls!
@luckytran Even the COVID troughs are as high as (or higher than) flu peaks.
@luckytran wore a mask to the mailbox today. Air monitor was over 110 most the day. The sky looked like thick blue stew.
Also like, no-one is even talking about where the smoke is coming from this year? Last year it was shocking (for the east coast) and now it's just a thing that happens.
