Plenaries continue with some high-level planning for improving vaccination among older adults. The @AmerGeriatrics is making moves!
(As a pseudo-infectious disease physician I feel extremely obligated to share the viewpoint that vaccines are good)
I do not envy this group who's had to update their slides for COVID-19 and RSV just within the last three weeks! (but also yay vaccine progress!)
Dr. Ken Schmader has the unenviable job of updating geriatricians on RSV vaccines. Take homes: (1) the 3 in the works are *different*, (2) only 1 has FDA approval (GSK... yesterday), and (3) the AICP has not weighed in...yet.
Dr. George Kuchel trying to summarize one of the hardest parts of my job: how should we be vaccinating frail older adults (especially those w/ HIV)? Have to balance immunogenicity (including sex difference!), life expectancy, risk of infection, AND side effect potential.
Super short summary from Dr. Kuchel is that we really only know with certainty what to do with flu vaccines in this population. Other vaccines are a little bit of a gray area / black box.
Improving first-wave COVID-19 vaccination for nursing home staff. Best results with:
(1) Having a champion
(2) Setting a target
(3) Staff rewards
(4) Using multiple outreach strategies
