Gregg Gonsalves

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.

@gregggonsalves As if the cuts to science didn't come straight from Trump!

@gregggonsalves

I think it's great.

Government paid for research, corporations monetized it.

Let the corporations fund the research.

@cryptrcv @gregggonsalves and China. In short, the USA will fall back heavily and it will cost dear corporations market positions.
For me it is pretty clear that some rich people tried to play both sides hoping for tax breaks and got way more than they bargained for. It is gonna be very sobering to watch. Also the way current "coalition" is built leaves little room for imagination what will happen when things will start to go to shit in the second half of this year.

@gregggonsalves That boot-licking has quite some "if only Comrade Stalin knew" vibes to it.

Didn't realize the Gleichschaltung of science in the US already progressed this far.

@gregggonsalves the DOGE cuts, despite usurping the constitutional power over the budget granted exclusively to the legislature, have already ended the United States’ scientific leadership. Even if they are reversed, too many scientists and support staff have already been forced to leave and find new jobs, and the trust of the staff, the public, and the world, has been lost.

We should still oppose this budget, and the cuts, but not to regain leadership

MastodonShadSterling (@ShadSterling@mastodon.social)@ZLabe@fediscience.org how much of the science the U.S. is shutting down are other countries prepared to take over?

@ShadSterling @gregggonsalves Yeah, it’s like the foreign intelligence network he burned during his first term. Things like this take a lifetime to build, and apparently under four months to completely destroy beyond hope of salvage.

@gregggonsalves to avoid silly stuff like this happening in the future, research should be financed 5 years in advance. So in case an idiot gets to power there is a buffer to use for science before the cuts get enacted. So there is time to elect someone else to revert the bullshit.
As it is now, all science is halted and that cannot be undone and easily started. It is stopped ann dissapears. One needs tonstaet from scratch. That takes 10 to 15 years.

@gunstick @gregggonsalves how would that help? They cut off funds that had already been allocated, for projects that were already approved and in progress. it’s already beyond their legal authority.

@gregggonsalves "President's call for a renewed commitment"

What planet is that guy living on?

@gregggonsalves Working on it. But many of the R&D types are dependent on government funds. They do not want to piss Trump/MAGA/DOGE off. Taking a stand is financially risky.

A text block, saying:
"If enacted, the FY26 budget request would end America's global scientific leadership. The cuts to science would imperil our nation's future health, security and prosperity.
This budget proposal stands in stark contrast to the President's call for a renewed commitment to American scientific leadership. Congress has demonstrated a bipartisan commitment to investment in research and must do so again to answer the President's call."
