Do you like the engagement you get on the fediverse, or do you think we have a Reply Guy Problem?
Interesting results. I think the affordances in the Fediverse that encourage engagement -- like a reverse-chronological inbox feed -- might also be involved in "reply guy" behaviour. I like the Mastodon app's way of trying to encourage engagement and disincent boorish responses.

Like your message that I'm responding to. I'm doing so because I'm interested in discussing a topic, but we don't officially know each other. Is that a bad thing?
Surely if one posts something on an open social network, then they are seeking some level of engagement, otherwise what's the point?
@gpollara I think when someone talks about reply guys, they talk about particular behaviour. For example: centring yourself, contradicting the original poster (especially if they know more than you), telling someone's joke back to them, low or no-content posts ("I don't know"), demanding research or other labour. All worse if there is a power differential, e.g. op is a woman, BIPOC, or LGBTQ+ and replier is a cis het white man.
