Having an "ñ" in my surname means constantly being gaslit by online forms that tell me my name can't contain special characters only to then tell me that my password must contain special characters, three emojis and a valid chess move.

As long as they don't ask for my firstborn and the pound of flesh closest to my heart, we can probably work something out.

I mean, you know -- one or the other. Demanding both is just crossing a line, you know? 🧐

@astro_jcm @auscandoc

If they're going to design annoyingly stupid forms and processes, I think we should demand that those annoyingly stupid processes be at least somewhat creative and amusing.

Then we can chuckle wryly as they suck the life out of us, instead of just whimpering softly. What's not to like? 😅

From Reddit:
My dad told me his password is: MickeyMinnieGoofyDonaldPlutoHueyLouieDeweyDublin
Because he was told his password had to contain 8 characters and at least one Capital

@punissuer @woozle @astro_jcm @auscandoc What I find really annoying with these password rules is they state these rules for a minimum combination of different types of character and then reject my automatically generated obscure passwords as they often quietly limit which ones they allow (or insist they cant be more than 12 character long).

@marjolica @punissuer @astro_jcm @auscandoc

YES. I run into that too.

I believe studies have shown that arbitrary password rules don't actually increase security -- so this is all basically security theatre.

@woozle @marjolica @punissuer @astro_jcm I think you are correct.

My health authority has finally abandoned the “you must change your password every 42 days” nonsense.

@auscandoc @marjolica @punissuer @astro_jcm

I'm vaguely remembering now that some credible authority issued new guidelines for this kind of thing, and it recommended against arbitrary character rules and time-based password reset requirements. (I probably have the link stashed somewhere.)
