Proton Says It’s "Politically Neutral" While Praising Republican Party. "It's reasonable to worry that tech companies' backbone for protecting users in this way might soften when they get too politically involved with any one administration," said Andrew Crocker, EFF's surveillance litigation director. theintercept.com/2025/01/28/pr #Proton #ProtonMail #AndyYen

The Intercept · Proton Mail Says It’s “Politically Neutral” While Praising Republican PartyBy Nikita Mazurov

"While Proton states that it 'cannot read any of your messages or hand them over to third parties,' the same doesn’t apply to email subjects; sender or recipient names and email addresses; the time a message was sent; or other information in the 'header' section of email messages."

@MediaActivist well, the headers are sent — and must be sent — in the clear. That’s just how email works.

@MediaActivist that’s just because they rip out subject line and rewriting it themselves or something. I doubt whatever trick they’re doing works seemlessly for whatever non tuta recipient, and certainly does not work for any non tuta sender.

Relying on a proprietary hack to open standard is not good opsec.

@LordsofHardwired @MediaActivist probably fine. Don’t buy the hype about anything than encrypted bodies and attachments though

@jonathankoren @MediaActivist so what is a good alternative for finding a new email. I’m open to whatever besides proton.

@LordsofHardwired @jonathankoren @MediaActivist

Before you do that... What exactly is Proton doing here that you have a problem with?

Being email? (Cause the concerns regarding header data will the case with all)

Or comparing Democrats and Republicans on Anti-Trust priorities?

@DroidPort @LordsofHardwired @jonathankoren For me? Claiming neutrality in situations of injustice means siding with the oppressor, to paraphrase Desmond Tutu, and I was disgusted by the grotesque "both sides" rhetoric in this era of late capitalism. That's in addition to their overpriced, under-performing services.

@MediaActivist @LordsofHardwired @jonathankoren

I don't need my email provider to be politically anything.

I think the things they stand for (primarily privacy) should be apolitical in the sense that they should matter to all people.

Proton are not out here being pro-trump era fascism, not matter what lens you want to put it under. Pointing out the difference in Dem and Republicans anti-trust record over the last few administrations is completely justified IMO
