Did ‘induced atmospheric vibration’ cause blackouts in #Europe? An #electrical engineer explains the phenomenon

#Portugal’s grid operator #REN was quoted as blaming the event on a rare phenomenon known as “induced #atmospheric #vibration”. REN has since reportedly refuted this.

But what is this vibration? And how can #energy systems be improved to mitigate the risk of widespread blackouts?

I’m giving a ‘special talk’ on April 12 (tomorrow) at 14:00 at @clab.tw 科技媒體實驗平台 in Taipei (Taiwan), about “Temporary and Distributed Libraries, active and independent librarianship”, as part of the great Radiotopia event co-organised by the Toolkit of Care project and C-LAB, with artists and activists using radio as a medium and a concept, curated by @shulea2, and coordinated by @stwst_linz (Linz, Austria) and @agenceapo33 (Nantes, France).

SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackApart from remantling—surely this is the opposite of dismantling and if not, it should be—The Supertone Sonic Laboratory, our music focus is on our new side project Vibrationists with @Suzy Starlite , @Dave Boyd and myself. ___________________________ Sound vibrations are the movement of air molecules caused by vibrating objects. These vibrations travel through solids, liquids, and gases as sound waves. When the sound waves reach our ears, our brains interpret them as sound. ___________________________ One of the first steps when creating a new project is describing what we are doing for our supporters and media. We have always struggled defining our music as it varied and covers many genres. Suzy and I are songwriters and if the tracks need a solo piano or acoustic guitar, that’s what they get. Frantic arpeggiated sequences—no problem. Things that go ‘boing’ or ‘clang’—a natural addition to the soundscape. At first, Vibrationists is a live performance multimedia project where we are reimagining a selection of songs from our five studio albums in the format of a three piece with Bodhrán, percussion, drum machine, Wurlitzer electric piano, synthesizers, guitars, bass and harmony vocals. Fortunately, I only have to play guitar and occasionally synthesizer plus sing leaving all the heavy musical lifting to my very talented band mates who are able to rub their tummies and pat their heads in multiple directions and time signatures whilst whistling a tune by Soft Machine at their most abstract. We are thinking of how describe what we are up to. ////// One gig is equivalent to 20 rehearsals and on June 1st we have our debut at Prohibition, in Óbidos—the first step in readying ourselves to tour. Keep an eye out for news, here and most social media, except X. https://vibrationists.eu

Galloping Bubbles

A buoyant bubble rises until it’s stopped by a wall. What happens, this video asks, if that wall vibrates up and down? If the vibration is large enough, the bubble loses its symmetry and starts to gallop along the wall. Using numerical simulations, the team determined the flow around the bubble. They also demonstrate several possible applications for this behavior: sorting bubbles by size, traversing mazes, and cleaning a surface. (Video and image credit: J. Guan et al.)

Hours counter add-on for the generator, so I know when to change the oil.

These are vibration sensing, no wiring required. Just stick them to the case somewhere and when the motor is running, the regular vibrations activate it and it counts engine hours, stopping when the engine comes to a rest.

Has a CR2032 battery on the back. We'll see how that lasts. The display goes to sleep when not in use.

How sound can boost beneficial soil microbes to heal nature

By this, we mean barriers to protect ecosystems from potentially undesirable noises. For instance, we’re asking questions such as:

do traffic and industrial noises harm the ecosystem?

We can't see sound! What is sound?

The video link shows an experiment using two tuning forks. In the experiment, some "thing" (energy) that we can not see, though we can hear, travels through space and this can be heard effecting the oscillation of the forks (aka vibration. aka sound)

It's not magic, it's (all) #physics
