There are so many secrets behind closed doors. However! This weekend in Bologna there is "Diverdeinverde" where a lot of the hidden and/or private gardens open up to visitors for a few hours. Expect lots of flower and garden photos soon. (At least I hope!! )

There's nothing better than an outdoor summer bar! This is my favourite of last year's - Camporella at Villa Serena. Great food, music, drinks and my favourite - twinkling fairy lights everywhere! After a hard day of escaping the July heat in the crypts of the cemetery, you can go and sit in a comfy chair, have a drink and relax. (I have actually done this! )

I realize I didn't do a great job of showing the lights going on and off in the last post because it's quite difficult to scroll through the pictures quickly. So, I've learned a new skill and made a bad GIF! I promise to now retire (Do)Orlock, for a bit. (The rest of this post is the same as the previous one!)

This door is one of the side doors from the Collegio di Spagna - part of the University of Bologna and operational since the 14th century. It is a college for Spanish Students and it is the oldest in the world open to foreign students. (More on this cool building later!)

Ex Voto Via Ca' Selvatica

In 1855 there was a cholera outbreak in Bologna. There were about 70,000 people living in the city with tens to hundreds of people being affected by cholera every day. (On the 12 July there were 169 cases alone registered)

The plaque reads:
"Addi' 22 luglio 1855
In questa via cesso' il morbo cholera
Per grazie di Maria"

On the day of the 22nd of July 1855
In this street, cholera was halted
Thanks to Mary.

Back in the good old days when you'd erect a monument after a pandemic - instead of letting RF "a worm ate my brain" Kennedy Jr. become a health secretary.

Sala Rusconi

In the Archiginnasio there is a room called the Sala Rusconi. Named after Pietro Giacomo Rusconi (1865-1916), it contains many rare and valuable books and manuscripts which were collected by him. These were donated to Bologna after the death of his wife Luisa Verzaglia in 1919 - as the couple had not had any children. You unfortunately cannot go into the room now but you can peek through the iron bar door from the Sala Stabat Mater.
The portrait you see over the door is Rusconi himself.
I wanted to give the photo the feel of an old-fashioned illustration to compliment the treasures and antiquities in this library.

(Per quelli che sanno un po' di dialetto bolognese, non trovate un po' ironico che ci sia una sala così piena di saggezza e storia e si chiama... Rusco... ni. )

Amongst the Stars / Fra le Stelle

I was at the Teatro Anatomico (Anatomical Theatre) today! There's so much to say about it but we'll just concentrate on the ceiling right now. It was built in 1645 by Antonio Levanti. We have Apollo, the protector of medicine, in the centre and he's surrounded by 14 other constellations. Back in the day consulting the heavens was a pretty normal part of medicine. You know, mercury is in retrograde so we should amputate that toe.
Astrology and medicine were intertwined and every part of the body was associated with an astrological sign. The ceiling was a representation of the medicine of the time and also how the human body and the heavens above were intrinsically linked.
Also, huge thank you to the Arabic world and the Middle East because without their knowledge, ancient science and wisdom - we would not have modern medicine!

About the buildings: the background is dominated by the twin towers of the pharma giant #Roche, the taller being the tallest bulding in Switzerland with 205m. On the left, there is the smaller Lonza building (68m) originally the tallest bulding of the city in the 60s, and now considered architectural heritage. Porta Castiglione for #Doorsday

"But that's not a door, you f*cking idiot!"
Well, in Italian it is. Porta = Door. So, if you have any problems with that - take it up with the country of Italy.
Porta Castiglione was first built in the middle of the 13th century and then given a spruce in the 15th century. Back in the day, it was part of the city walls used to protect the centre - it was a machiocolated rampart (which means it was used for defensive purposes to keep undesirables out). Thankfully, it's not used for that purpose anymore, so now I can live here.

No, this little door is not in the Shire. We're in Giardini Margherita in Bologna. This little hut is a reconstruction of a Villanovian dwelling. The Villanovians (900-550 BCE) are the first Etruscan inhabitants of the Bologna we know today. This is probably also the only house in Bologna that AirB&B don't have their grubby little hands on... yet.

Ring Ring! It's #Doorsday!

Here we have the front door to Casa Caccianemici in Bologna. Last week for window Friday I showed you one of its windows.
Some of the building dates back to the 13th century, other parts to the 15th century. It used to be home to the Passapoveri tower. "Caccianemici" means "to throw out/get rid of enemies" - so I guess as long as you are on good terms with the homeowners you're fine!

"Open The Noor!" It's #Doorsday!
Being a bit cheeky with this door - as it's a door within a door - Doorception

The open door is part of Il Palazzo Monti Poi Salina, this version - built between 1736 and 1738. One of the courtyards has a well dating back to the 14th century, oh and the palazzo was used as a bomb shelter during World War II.
There's like a web designer office or something across the road - I don't know much about it to be honest!
