swachter<p>More bowls more bowls </p><p>1) super happy with how this herb bowl came out. It’s a stencil on bisqueware with a quick single layer of glaze on top. I learned some things like “glaze won’t really stick to small areas” and I probably could have let it pick up a bit more glaze, but overall I’m really really happy with it. <br>2) this was a layer of white glaze, then apply stencil, then blue glaze on top then peel the stencil off. This is the best available side: tbh this one is kind of a mess and I probably should have just washed it and started over. I don’t think I would attempt this again. <br>3) This is underglaze applied to bisqueware through a stencil, then clear glaze on top. The ant legs are really too thin for this to work super great (the underglaze flaked off in places when I pulled the stencil up); I would try this again with a different stencil or else I should have put the underglaze on before bisque firing. Also this got reduction fired, not oxidation as the rest have been. I really like the look of oxidation fired stuff better. </p><p><a href="https://toot.boston/tags/pottery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pottery</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/ceramics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ceramics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/bowls" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bowls</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/handmade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>handmade</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/trynewthings2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trynewthings2025</span></a></p>
swachter<p>Ayyy another not-terrible thing! I’m so glad I took notes on what all I did on this one. Mostly this was A Science on how to do decent stencils - I put down black underglaze in the first step, but unfortunately the adhesive on the back of the stencil pulled it up in undesirable ways. LEARNINGS!! </p><p>I’m definitely coming to the conclusion that underglaze and adhesive stencils don’t play well together. I still need to try underglaze on greenware and see how that works with using a stencil after bisque firing. </p><p><a href="https://toot.boston/tags/ceramics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ceramics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/pottery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pottery</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/trynewthings2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trynewthings2025</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/butterfly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>butterfly</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/monarch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>monarch</span></a></p>
swachter<p>Went back to the pottery studio today. Successfully threw three bowls and a (hopefully?) mug (once our teacher covers handles) and trimmed another bowl I threw on Friday. </p><p>It’s kinda nice looking at some earlier photos of stuff from even two or three weeks ago and being like, yeah, these suck less. (Which is not to say that they are amazing, because they are not! But they do suck less!)</p><p>(Global alt text: four photographs of today’s bowls and mug. Things are reasonably rounded and even and recognizably bowls (or mug).)</p><p><a href="https://toot.boston/tags/pottery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pottery</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/ceramics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ceramics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/trynewthings2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trynewthings2025</span></a></p>
swachter<p>Post-trimming-class results: two pots moved to the greenware shelf for drying and firing, one pot unceremoniously re-smooshed into my clay bag, one pot trimmed too thin at the base and some supplementary clay added and returned to work shelf for potential future trimming. I still have four pots from Wednesday’s session that weren’t quite dry enough to trim. </p><p>The unceremoniously re-smooshed pot was the first pot I threw and it was absolutely a monstrosity. I had very low expectations of its survival and was mostly using it as tool handling practice. </p><p>The two survivors both had a bit of “chattering” (apparently this is when your tool kind of vibrates and creates ridges, often when your clay is too wet or dry to trim). I didn’t mean for it to happen, but I think it’s kinda cool!</p><p><a href="https://toot.boston/tags/ceramics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ceramics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/pottery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pottery</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/trynewthings2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trynewthings2025</span></a></p>
swachter<p>Second day of pottery class: I have produced three bowl-type objects that are not dreadful and one cylinder that is awful but not quite bad enough to slump back together (teacher: that will be great trimming practice!!!). My goal in signing up for this class was to suck at something and boy howdy am I great at it!</p><p><a href="https://toot.boston/tags/pottery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pottery</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/ceramics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ceramics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.boston/tags/trynewthings2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trynewthings2025</span></a></p>
